Raiders lose Aidan O'Connell for Chargers game, leaving Fernando Mendoza as only backup

The Raiders head into Sunday's AFC West opener at SoFi Stadium a quarterback short of the plan. Aidan O'Connell will miss the Chargers game for a personal matter, a non-injury absence that went from questionable on Friday to ruled out by evening, as Raiders.com's Paul Gutierrez reported. That leaves rookie Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick, as the only quarterback behind Kirk Cousins, per the New York Post.

On paper it's a small change. O'Connell had been working as the emergency third quarterback, so Mendoza was already one hit away from the field. My read: what disappears is the cushion. If Cousins gets banged up, the careful timeline for the rookie gets tested in a division road game, and there's no veteran left to absorb a bad half.

The tight end room is thin too. Brock Bowers is doubtful with a knee injury after practicing Friday for the first time since meniscus surgery, and ProFootballTalk's Josh Alper wrote that the signs point to a second straight missed game. The Raiders hedged by elevating tight end Chris Myarick and wide receiver Cody White from the practice squad, which keeps Michael Mayer and Ian Thomas as the main options if Bowers sits. Cornerback Darien Porter (foot) is already out, according to the team's final injury report.

The opponent arrives wounded in its own way. The Chargers opened with a 26-14 loss to Arizona in which Justin Herbert went 17 of 27 for 209 yards with a touchdown, an interception and three sacks taken, and Jim Harbaugh called the effort "sloppy," USA Today's breakdown noted. Los Angeles lists receiver Ladd McConkey (ribs) as questionable and has ruled out defensive back Elijah Molden, per the Chargers' own report.

Put the two ledgers side by side and the Raiders' 27-13 win over Miami looks like a real asset rather than a formality. Opinion: a pass rush that got home against the Dolphins now faces a line that couldn't keep Arizona off its quarterback, and that matchup matters more today than anything the tight ends do.
