Ashton Jeanty limited with new foot injury as Raiders line gets healthier
Jeanty was downgraded to limited Thursday with a foot added to his ankle, while Jackson Powers-Johnson and Brock Bowers both practiced in full.
Ashton Jeanty practiced in full on Wednesday. On Thursday he was limited, and the foot listed next to his ankle was new. That is the line item that matters most this week.
The team's own Week 5 injury report shows Jeanty as the only Raider who moved the wrong way between Wednesday and Thursday, now carrying an ankle and a foot. CBS Sports reported the club has given no indication he is in danger of missing Sunday at New England. Raiders Beat has been making the case that the ankle, aggravated back in September, has not looked right since. Friday's report is the one to read.
The timing is bad because the run game has no margin. Las Vegas is averaging 3.1 yards a carry, the worst figure in the league, on 372 yards through four games, per the NFL's team rushing numbers. The team's key matchups piece notes the Chiefs stuffed 10 of 26 Raiders carries in Week 4 and that Jeanty has been under four yards a carry since Week 1. Mike Washington Jr. has 120 yards on 24 carries and the only rushing touchdown on the roster. If the foot limits Jeanty, Washington's share grows whether the staff plans it or not.
The rest of the report reads better. Jackson Powers-Johnson (groin) and Brock Bowers (knee) both went from limited Wednesday to full Thursday, and Powers-Johnson sat out the Chiefs game, so getting the interior line back in one piece is worth more to this offense than any play call. Folorunso Fatukasi and Dareke Young also practiced in full. Jalen Nailor missed both days with a concussion and Cody White stayed limited with an ankle, so the receiver room is still thin, with Dont'e Thornton Jr. getting two more practices on his return from injured reserve.
Opinion: the quiet reason for optimism is the other sideline. New England held out cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis, cornerback Karon Prunty and receiver Mack Hollins on both days, and Raiders.com floated safety Kevin Byard as the man who draws Bowers. A secondary still assembling itself on Friday is a secondary that gets tested by a tight end who does not need separation to win.
Watch Friday's practice for Jeanty's status and the first game designations of the week, and watch whether New England's corners get on the field at all. Kickoff is Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
