Unsealed Korn Ferry memo on Brian Flores surfaces from Raiders' coaching search
A search firm write-up on Flores is now evidence in the NFL discrimination suit, while Kirk Cousins keeps the Raiders job and the offensive line gets a hard look.
The biggest Raiders news of the day happened in a courtroom. A candidate profile that recruiting firm Korn Ferry prepared for the Raiders' head coaching search was unsealed Tuesday and is now evidence in Brian Flores' discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. Front Office Sports obtained the document first, and CBS Sports reported the memo listed as a strength that Flores was "polished and a good presenter despite growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn (same as Mike Tyson)," and among weaknesses that he "can fool you with his polish upwards" and could be "a dictator with players, coaches."
Flores' attorney Michael Willemin told Front Office Sports the write-up casts his client as an "angry Black man," and his firms said the profile "leans heavily on racial stereotypes." Per OutKick, the memo went public after a magistrate judge rejected Korn Ferry's effort to keep it sealed. Flores was never interviewed in Las Vegas, and that search ended with Klint Kubiak introduced on Feb. 10. Neither the team, the league nor Korn Ferry has commented, and Yahoo Sports reports discovery is still running. Opinion: if you pay a search firm, you own what it writes down.
On the field, Kubiak settled nothing and confirmed everything. Kirk Cousins keeps the job after the 45-17 loss at New England. "Kirk's the starter, and if Fernando's called upon, he'll be ready to go just like he was (Sunday)," Kubiak said Monday, per FOX5 Vegas. The Week 6 depth chart posted on Raiders.com lists Cousins first and Fernando Mendoza second. Mendoza went 6 of 8 for 48 yards in garbage time, a clean first look and not an argument for anything.
The run game is the line item that won't balance. Warren Sharp's numbers, via Heavy, have 53 percent of Raiders carries met at or behind the line of scrimmage, second worst in the league, with Ashton Jeanty averaging 3.3 yards a carry. Kubiak said the staff has "to look at everything" up front and that "this falls on me," per Raiders Wire, which flagged left guard as the likeliest change.
The injury ledger is mixed. Jalen Nailor is expected back at practice as he clears the concussion protocol, defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway entered it Sunday, and Jeanty is still playing through ankle and foot trouble. "Unless I can't run, jump, I'm playing," Jeanty said, per Yahoo Sports. Darien Porter also took cornerback work from rookie Hezekiah Masses, and Kubiak reopened that competition.
Buffalo visits Allegiant Stadium on Sunday at 4-1 with an injury list of its own. Watch whether left guard changes hands this week, whether Nailor is cleared in time, and whether anyone in the building answers a question about the memo.
