Raiders reach the Jets near full strength as New York rules out three defenders
Patrick Johnson is the only Raider ruled out for Sunday at MetLife Stadium, while the Jets will be without T'Vondre Sweat, Joseph Ossai and Max Mitchell, with David Bailey doubtful.
The Raiders flew east on Friday with the shortest injury report they have filed in a month. The team's official Week 8 report lists defensive end Patrick Johnson out with a stinger and tight end Carter Runyon staying on injured reserve. Guard-center Jackson Powers-Johnson is questionable with a back injury after a limited Friday, and receiver Jack Bech, back at practice from a broken forearm, is questionable too. Brock Bowers, Foley Fatukasi, DJ Glaze, Ian Thomas, Quay Walker and Eric Stokes all came off the report with no designation, a line ProFootballTalk confirmed Friday night.
The other column is where the real credit sits. New York ruled out defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat with a knee injury, edge rusher Joseph Ossai with an ankle and lineman Max Mitchell with a concussion, and listed rookie edge David Bailey doubtful with a groin problem. Bailey, the second overall pick in April, leads the Jets with 5.5 sacks. Running back Breece Hall and former Raiders guard Dylan Parham are questionable.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium on Fox, with the Jets favored by a point and a half per ESPN. Las Vegas is 3-4 and has lost four in a row since a 3-0 start. New York is 2-5 and has dropped four games by a single possession. Kirk Cousins leads the league with 16 touchdown passes. The ground game does not match the receipt: the Jets' own preview notes Las Vegas ranks 31st in rushing at 74.7 yards a game and 3.01 a carry, with Ashton Jeanty averaging 3.1 per attempt.
The liability is still the defense. Las Vegas has allowed at least 27 points in five straight games, tying a franchise mark set in 2004 and 2020, and a sixth would stand alone, as Roundtable Sports' Brian Burden laid out this week. The run defense ranks 30th at 143.6 yards a game.
Opinion: this is the softest landing the schedule is going to offer. A 2-5 team missing three defensive starters, one week before the deadline, is the game you win if the roster is worth keeping together.
Watch three things. Whether Bech is actually activated by Sunday, Powers-Johnson's back on a line that has already been shuffled, and the scoreboard at 27. The trade deadline is Nov. 10, and Jason La Canfora reported this week, citing an unnamed general manager, that the asking price for Maxx Crosby has not moved off two first-round picks. Crosby is a Week 8 captain alongside Jeanty and Dylan Laube.
