College football players of the week: Week 5, 2026
Iowa State's Aiden Flora ran for three touchdowns and threw for two in a 45-42 win over West Virginia, including the winning 2-yard run with 1:57 left. Tennessee's Dejuan Lane had nine tackles, two sacks and an interception against Auburn, and San Diego State's Jaylon Hawkins opened the second half with a 96-yard kickoff return that started a comeback from 17-3 down.
Five touchdowns, three run and two thrown, and the last two decided the game. After West Virginia went up 35-31, his 63-yard run with 6:08 left put Iowa State ahead 38-35. West Virginia scored again to lead 42-38, and Flora finished the next drive with a 2-yard run with 1:57 left; the Mountaineers fumbled on their last possession. His touchdown passes went 46 yards to Cody Jackson and 2 yards to Vince Benetti with 5 seconds left in the first half. Jeremiah Smith had 206 receiving yards at No. 14 Iowa and Keelon Russell accounted for four touchdowns at No. 16 Mississippi State, both road wins over ranked teams, but neither game was within one score in the fourth quarter. Flora did it at home against an unranked team and gets the edge on production and on deciding the game.
Runner-up: Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State: 11 catches, 206 yards, 2 TD in a 31-14 win at No. 14 Iowa
9 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 INT (32-yard return)
Nine tackles, two sacks and an interception against an SEC team. With Tennessee up 10-7 midway through the third quarter, he picked off Byrum Brown at the Tennessee 24 and returned it 32 yards to the Auburn 44, and DeSean Bishop ran 44 yards for a touchdown on the next play to make it 17-7. Tennessee's notes say he's the fourth FBS player in eight seasons with at least nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception in one game. San Diego State's Cameron Cooper made the two biggest plays of a two-point win, a blocked field goal and a pick-six with 2:47 left, but against Texas State. SMU's Marques White had three sacks against Boston College, one a strip that set up a touchdown. Lane had more production than either, and against a better team than Cooper's.
Runner-up: Cameron Cooper, San Diego State: blocked a 35-yard field goal and returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown with 2:47 left in a 31-29 win over Texas State
W San Diego State 31, Texas State 29 · vs Texas State
96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the second half, cutting a 17-3 deficit to 17-10
San Diego State trailed 17-3 at halftime when Hawkins took the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. It started a run of 21 straight Aztec points, and they won by two. NC State's Kanoah Vinesett was the other choice: he went 3 for 3 against Louisville, and his 28-yarder with 5:30 left broke a 28-28 tie and held up as the winning points. Vinesett did it against a Power 4 team, but a 96-yard touchdown is worth more than a 28-yard field goal, and Hawkins's came in a game decided by two. North Carolina's Jaden Jefferson returned a kickoff 98 yards against No. 3 Notre Dame, but in an 11-point loss, and Florida Atlantic's Leonard Farrow returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a 66-10 win over FCS Texas Southern.
Runner-up: Kanoah Vinesett, NC State: 3 of 3 field goals (46, 29 and 28 yards), including the 28-yard go-ahead kick with 5:30 left in a 31-28 win over Louisville
One player per slot, judged the way the power rankings judge teams: what happened on the field, against whom and where. Production counts, and so does the opponent. A big game against a good defense or on the road beats the same numbers at home against a bad one, and a play that decided the game beats one that padded a lead. A great game in a loss can still win if nothing else comes close.
NFL awards follow the league's format, AFC and NFC, and go up on Tuesday morning, a day before the league names its own. College awards are national and go up on Sunday morning. Where there's an official pick (the NFL's, or Walter Camp's for college offense and defense), it's listed under ours, agree or not.
