Mark Davis says the Mendoza-over-Cousins call belongs to his football staff
Raiders owner praises both quarterbacks and sets no timeline, while the three-game skid traces to 22 rushing yards and seven penalties.
Mark Davis spent Tuesday at the league meetings doing what owners are supposed to do about quarterback depth charts, which is nothing. Asked by the New York Post's Vincent Bonsignore when Fernando Mendoza takes the job, Davis handed the question to the people he pays to answer it and said the rookie's work for now is learning behind Kirk Cousins, as the Post reported in an exclusive interview.
He was complimentary in both directions. Mendoza is "like a sponge in terms of learning" and "wants to be the greatest," Davis said. On Cousins he was blunter: "Fantastic. Couldn't be better," and "he's a tough SOB." Read it as you like, but the owner isn't the one pushing for a change.
The ledger says he's right to leave it alone. Cousins went 23 of 41 for 313 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 33-30 loss to Buffalo, per CBS Sports. That is not the line of a man losing games by himself. The run game is closer to it.
Ashton Jeanty carried 10 times for 22 yards. Mike Washington Jr., a fourth-round rookie, carried nine times for 43 and played a season-high 23 snaps, as Sports Illustrated's Bob Lundeberg noted. Jeanty sits at 3.2 yards a carry for the year and hasn't cleared 58 rushing yards since Week 1. Just Blog Baby's snap charting has him under 60 percent of the offensive snaps two weeks running while Washington's share climbs. Opinion, labelled as such: Las Vegas drafted a workhorse and is being handed a rotation, and that split keeps moving the wrong way for the guy they spent the pick on.
Klint Kubiak flagged a different line item. Seven penalties for 62 yards on Sunday, and he told KTNV the coaching staff's share of that is "unacceptable." He added that "yesterday was a great example of how much it can hurt you, and it did."
Los Angeles arrives Sunday at 2-4 and short-handed. Former Raider Davante Adams is out six to ten weeks with a ruptured hamstring, Sean McVay said, and the Rams have also lost Poona Ford for the season and Kobie Turner for a month. Las Vegas, at home, against that, is still a 4.5-point underdog.
Kickoff is 1:25 p.m. Pacific at Allegiant. Two things worth watching: the first-quarter carry split between Jeanty and Washington, and whether Kubiak's penalty sermon survives contact.
