Kirk joins Evans and Samuel out of 49ers practice as Raiders re-sign Cody White

San Francisco's receiver room shrank again on Thursday while Christian McCaffrey returned, and Las Vegas reversed its own roster move inside a day.

San Francisco's receiver room is the story heading into Sunday, and it keeps shrinking. The official Week 9 injury report has Mike Evans (ribs, Achilles) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring) sitting out a second straight day of practice, and Christian Kirk went backward, limited Wednesday with a knee issue and not on the field at all Thursday. Demarcus Robinson was limited with an ankle.

General manager John Lynch said Thursday morning that Evans is unlikely to play. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was more upbeat about the longer view, telling Bay Area radio station KNBR after practice that it is "what they say, Achilles flare up," and that "Mike's had this before in the past, and it hasn't affected him too long." Shanahan added he is "not overly worried." Evans has 27 catches for 420 yards and three touchdowns in six games since joining the 49ers, per 49ers Webzone.

One piece moved the other way. Christian McCaffrey returned as a limited participant after missing Wednesday with the mild hamstring strain he picked up in Week 7, David Bonilla reported. Nick Bosa practiced limited for a second day as he works back from the calf injury that has cost him five games.

The Raiders list is short and mostly trending up. Thomas Booker did not practice with an ankle injury after being limited Wednesday. Darien Porter, who left the Jets game, was limited with a groin injury, and Dont'e Thornton was limited with a back issue. Folorunso Fatukasi and Ian Thomas both went full.

The other move was the front office undoing itself. Las Vegas re-signed receiver Cody White and waived tight end Carter Runyon on Thursday, a day after cutting White to activate Runyon from injured reserve. Runyon lasted one day on the active roster. White, who had been productive in the red zone early in the season, lost his job and got it back inside 24 hours.

Opinion: that is a roster department admitting a mistake quickly, which beats living with it. Still, burning a healthy tight end to fix a 24-hour error is not the sign of a depth chart with slack in it.

Friday's report brings the game designations, and that is when the Evans and Samuel questions get answered on paper. Watch Porter's status too. A 6-1 San Francisco team missing most of its receivers is the softest version of this matchup the Raiders are going to see.
