Cousins and Bowers cover Raiders +1.5, with a 95-yard kick return helping

Cashed

Taking a 1.5-point dog and winning outright is the cleanest 6.5 points you can get. Kirk Cousins went 19 of 26 for 247 yards with three touchdown passes, two of them to Brock Bowers, who was exactly the lever we said New York's linebackers could not handle. Honesty demands the rest: Dylan Laube's 95-yard kickoff return was not in the writeup, Matt Gay's 53-yarder with 31 seconds left decided it, and Braelon Allen's 147 rushing yards was the danger we flagged. Right side, partly borrowed reasons.

The pick: Raiders +1.5 at Jets

The case before kickoff

The Raiders live in two-tight-end sets, 43.5% of their snaps and second-most in the league, and Brock Bowers with Michael Mayer accounts for close to 40% of the receiving production. Bowers was limited Wednesday with a calf and is averaging 91 yards and 10.4 targets in the five games he's played. New York has defended the position respectably on the season, 48 yards a game to tight ends with three touchdowns allowed all year, but the individual charting says the linebackers are the seam: Jamien Sherwood gave up nine catches on 10 targets for 127 yards to Detroit, Demario Davis allowed eight of nine for 76 yards in Weeks 3 and 4, and Miami's Greg Dulcich just went for 86 on them in Week 7. The likely plan is nickel and safety matching rather than a shadow, because Azareye'h Thomas is charted at left cornerback on fixed sides and nothing in the reporting has the Jets travelling anyone, so if they do tilt help toward Bowers the beneficiary profiles as Tre Tucker and his 474 yards rather than a mismatch against a backup corner. On the rush, Maxx Crosby has 35 pressures, second in the league, and half a sack since Week 1, and Las Vegas ranks 31st in sack percentage while taking 2.82 seconds to get there, which runs into Geno Smith converting pressure into sacks at 29.2%, the highest rate in football. Going the other way, the Jets blitz on 38 to 40% of dropbacks yet rank 29th in pressure percentage, David Bailey and Joseph Ossai both missed Wednesday, and Kirk Cousins is third-best in the league at escaping pressure without a sack and leads the NFL with six touchdowns on throws under 10 air yards at 78.1%. We make it Jets -0.5; the market says -1.5. Now the other half, because it's the clearest edge on the field and it belongs to New York: Braelon Allen has 357 rushing yards since Week 4, second in the league, with more carries of 10-plus yards than anyone, against a Raiders defense allowing 4.98 a carry and 143.6 yards a game, 31st and 30th, though T'Vondre Sweat being doubtful takes a little off that. Las Vegas can't reply on the ground, with Ashton Jeanty at 2.29 a carry over three games and his workload falling every single week from 23 carries to eight, and a defense that's gone from second to 32nd in EPA per play while allowing 30-plus points in three straight. What keeps us on the Raiders is the Jets' red zone, 37.5% and dead last with six touchdowns in 14 trips, plus a quarterback who's thrown 16 touchdown passes to lead the league. This is a one-point disagreement with the market and nothing more, and we laid the Jets last week and are against them now purely on the number.
