Miami lost for the first time and Ohio State for the third, and the top was rebuilt around them. Georgia is first after winning 42-7 at Ole Miss, Texas stays second after winning at Missouri, and Alabama moves up five to third after winning by 18 at LSU. Notre Dame beat Miami 31-24 and climbs 16 places to fourth, the biggest move of the week, and Tennessee climbs eight to eighth after beating Kentucky 34-6. The biggest falls are Ohio State's, Indiana's and Ole Miss's, nine places each, and Kentucky's, six.
Georgia is ahead of Texas although Texas has more wins over ranked teams, three to two, because Georgia's two came on the road by an average of 19 points, one of them at Alabama, and it beat Oklahoma and Florida, the teams that beat Texas, by a combined 47. Notre Dame is six places ahead of BYU, which beat it, because BYU also lost at UCF and Notre Dame's win over Miami is the best on either résumé. Indiana fell nine while idle: none of its wins is over a ranked team, and nine teams that were behind it last week now have at least one. USC is ahead of Ohio State on head-to-head now that the Buckeyes have a third loss.
Florida and Missouri drop out; Wisconsin and Oklahoma State come in. Florida lost 23-7 at home to Oklahoma for its fourth loss, and Missouri lost 34-20 at home to Texas, and its best win, over Florida, is now over a 5-4 team. Next weekend: Texas at LSU, USC at Indiana, Utah at Arizona, Texas Tech at Oklahoma State, Missouri at Georgia, Tennessee at Texas A&M, Ole Miss at Oklahoma, Illinois at UCLA, Duke at Miami, Wake Forest at SMU and Baylor at BYU. None of the 25 is idle.
Method
Results only. Preseason polls, recruiting rankings, coaching hires and offseason talk don't count. The inputs are who a team beat, where the game was played, and by how much.
Who you beat matters most: a win over a good team outweighs any blowout of a bad one, and opponent quality is judged by how those opponents have played this season. A road win counts for more than a neutral-site win, and a neutral-site win for more than a home win. A close road loss to a top team can rank above an unbeaten record against weak opponents. Margin breaks ties between similar résumés; it won't lift a team past one with better wins.
One exception: the defending national champion holds No. 1 until it loses. Every Sunday morning the Top 25 is rebuilt from scratch, not shuffled from last week's list. Ten games is still a thin résumé, so expect more movement in September than in November. When a placement is an editorial call that departs from this method, the team's note says so.
Also considered: Louisville, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico.
Dropped out: Florida (17), Missouri (23).

Heisman watch
Five players, ranked on the same terms as our NFL MVP watch: production adjusted for efficiency and mistakes, the defenses faced, how much of the offense runs through them and how much help they have. College adds one more: level of competition. Numbers against FCS teams count for little, and a win over a weak FBS team counts for less than one over a good team. Team record counts, but only a little. Every position is eligible; anyone who isn't a quarterback has to be exceptional. Ten games is still a thin sample.
Unchanged after a loss. At Notre Dame, Mensah went 24 of 43 for 276 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, and Malachi Toney, his leading receiver, didn't appear in the box score. For the season he's completing 76.8 percent at 9.8 yards per attempt with 28 touchdown passes and two interceptions, and against the five FBS teams with winning records he's played he's 125 of 170 for 1,384 yards, 14 touchdowns and one interception. The case against: Notre Dame held him to 6.4 yards per attempt, his interception led to the touchdown that made it 31-17, and Miami's last good chance ended with three straight incompletions from the Irish 18.
2
Jeremiah Smith
WR · Ohio State (6-3) · Last week 2=
69 catches, 1,200 yards, 14 TD
Unchanged. Against Oregon, Smith caught seven passes for 133 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown from Luke Fahey with 3:25 left. He has 69 catches for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, and against the six teams with winning records Ohio State has played he has 52 catches for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's done it with two quarterbacks: Julian Sayin has thrown for 2,007 yards and Fahey for 823. The case against: a receiver needs his quarterback, Ohio State has lost two straight and is 6-3, and two of its four failed fourth downs Saturday were incompletions thrown his way.
New. Against Miami, Carr went 29 of 40 for 319 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover, two of them to Micah Gilbert, and Notre Dame led 24-3 early in the third quarter. For the season he has 21 touchdown passes and one interception, and against the four teams with winning records he's faced, Wisconsin, North Carolina, BYU and Miami, he's 96 of 147 for 1,053 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. The case against: his 8.3 yards per attempt is the lowest of the four quarterbacks here, he threw 49 passes for 261 yards and no touchdowns in the loss at BYU, and Notre Dame's backs have run for more than 1,400 yards.
Unchanged. Against Cincinnati, Weigman went 17 of 24 for 227 yards and two touchdowns to Amare Thomas and ran for a third. He has accounted for 29 touchdowns with four turnovers, and seven of his eight FBS opponents have winning records; against them he's 142 of 215 for 1,918 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions, plus all seven of his rushing touchdowns. The case against: four of those seven teams are 5-4, he lost a fumble in both of Houston's losses and didn't throw a touchdown pass at Utah, and three of his touchdown passes came against Southern, an FCS team.
Unchanged. Against TCU, which had held its other FBS opponents to 15.1 points a game, Fifita went 24 of 37 for 313 yards and two touchdowns, ran for another, and led the 75-yard drive that cut it to 28-26 with 1:45 left. He has 2,794 passing yards, the most of anyone here, at 73.0 percent and 9.1 yards per attempt, and Arizona's leading rusher has 373 yards, so the offense is him. The case against: one of his five interceptions was returned 93 yards for a TCU touchdown, Arizona lost both of its games against ranked teams, and five of his eight FBS opponents allow at least 28 points a game to FBS teams.
Also considered: Gio Lopez, Wake Forest (24 touchdowns and one turnover, but no statistics against Merrimack and only two games against teams with winning records); Gunner Stockton, Georgia (20 touchdown passes at 9.5 yards per attempt for the top team, but 196 attempts in nine games and 101 passing yards against Florida); Devon Dampier, Utah (27 touchdowns for an unbeaten team, but seven interceptions and three lost fumbles); DeSean Bishop, Tennessee (1,066 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, but 5.4 yards a carry and 34 yards against Texas); Marcus Stokes, Memphis (25 touchdown passes at 9.8 yards per attempt, but eight turnovers, five of them in the loss at Tulane).

Up two. Georgia's two wins over teams ranked here both came on the road, 20-17 at Alabama, now third, and Saturday's 42-7 at Ole Miss, and it beat Oklahoma by 28 and Florida by 19, the two teams that beat Texas. The loss is 27-24 at home to Auburn, 5-4. Texas has more ranked wins, three to two, but the one at Alabama is better than any win Texas has, and Georgia has one fewer loss. Gunner Stockton's 15-yard run made it 28-0 with 2:42 left in the half. Stockton threw four touchdown passes, three to Talyn Taylor, and Georgia ran for 295 yards without a turnover. Unchanged. Texas has beaten six FBS teams with winning records, more than anyone, and three are ranked here: Tennessee in Knoxville and Ohio State and Ole Miss at home. Both losses are by three to 5-4 teams, Oklahoma in Dallas and Florida at home, and Georgia beat both by 19 or more, which is why the Bulldogs are first. Missouri led 20-13 after a 72-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. Arch Manning answered with a 25-yard touchdown to Jermaine Bishop Jr. with 1:52 left in the quarter, hit Raleek Brown for 23 yards and the lead with 5:03 to play, and Brown added an 8-yard run. Up five. Alabama has three wins over teams ranked here, two on the road and all by 18 or more: 45-17 at Kentucky, 49-18 over South Carolina and Saturday's 31-13 at LSU. The losses are by three at home to Georgia and by 16 at Tennessee. The Vols' two ranked wins both came at home, and Alabama's losses are to the teams now first and eighth, so the head-to-head result doesn't close the gap. LSU led 13-10 late in the third quarter and outgained Alabama 457-285, but went 0 for 4 on fourth down. Keelon Russell threw touchdown passes of 7, 25 and 4 yards in just over nine minutes and finished 17 of 24 for 206. Next: at Vanderbilt.

W 31-24 Miami
Up 16. Beating Miami gives Notre Dame the best win of the week, and with 41-13 over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field it has two wins over teams ranked here. The loss is 28-24 at BYU, which is six places back despite that result because it also lost at UCF, 5-4, and Notre Dame's win over Miami is better than BYU's over Notre Dame. Alabama, with three ranked wins, is a place ahead. CJ Carr went 29 of 40 for 319 yards and three touchdowns for a 24-3 lead early in the third quarter. Miami twice got within seven and reached the Irish 18, and Luke Talich broke up its fourth-down pass with 3:36 left. Boston College visits Saturday.

Down four after its first loss. Miami still has four wins over FBS teams with winning records, three on the road: 33-20 at Wake Forest, now 8-1, 41-13 at Clemson and 38-35 at North Carolina, plus 52-23 over Pitt. That's deeper than Utah's résumé, and the loss came by seven at the team now fourth, so Miami stays ahead of the unbeaten Utes. Miami trailed 24-3 and got within 24-17. Darian Mensah's interception led to the touchdown that made it 31-17, and after Cooper Barkate's 1-yard catch, Miami's next drive ended on downs at the Irish 18 with 3:36 left. Malachi Toney, its leading receiver, didn't appear in the box score. Duke visits Saturday.

Unchanged. Utah is unbeaten with two wins over teams ranked here, BYU and Houston, both 7-2 and both beaten by eight at home, plus 49-25 at Cincinnati. UCLA's best wins are about as good, and Utah's wider margins keep it a place ahead. Utah led 14-0 after two first-quarter drives, then BYU scored 20 straight, seven of them after a Utah fumble. Braden Pegan's 14-yard catch with 1:50 left in the third quarter and Devon Dampier's 3-yard run made it 28-20, and BYU's last two drives ended in end-zone interceptions by Trey Reynolds and Nate Ritchie. Its other seven opponents are Minnesota, 5-4, and six teams with a combined record of 19-35. Utah's best wins are about as good and came by wider margins, and Tennessee has a better win than either, over Alabama, but two losses. Minnesota tied it 17-17 with 12:50 left. On the next snap Ty Dieffenbach threw 75 yards to Aidan Mizell, and after a Minnesota field goal he hit Mizell for another 75-yard touchdown with 7:21 left. Up eight. Tennessee has two wins over teams ranked here, 26-10 over Alabama and Saturday's 34-6 over Kentucky, both in Knoxville, and both losses are by three, to Texas at home and at South Carolina. Alabama is ahead despite losing in Knoxville because it has three ranked wins, two on the road; Tennessee's road wins are over Arkansas and Georgia Tech, a combined 5-13. Utah and UCLA have no win that good, but no losses. Up 13-6, Tennessee recovered Kenny Minchey's fumble at the Kentucky 47 late in the third quarter and scored 21 in the fourth. Up four. Oregon has beaten three teams ranked here, two of them on the road: 41-27 at USC, Saturday's 41-28 at Ohio State and 34-27 over Boise State. The losses, by two at home to UCLA, by eight at Oklahoma State and by 11 at Illinois, are why Oregon is behind the teams above it. Bo Jackson's two first-quarter touchdown runs put Ohio State up 14-0. Oregon then scored 38 straight: Jamari Johnson's 2-yard run as the half ended made it 17-14, and Dierre Hill Jr. ran 48 yards for a touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter. Ohio State went 0 for 4 on fourth down. Michigan visits Saturday.

L 20-28 at Utah
Up two after a loss, because its best win got better: BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo, and the Irish beat Miami on Saturday. It also beat Arizona, 7-2, at home. The losses are in double overtime at UCF, 5-4, and Saturday's at Utah, and the UCF loss is why BYU is behind Notre Dame despite the head-to-head win. That win also puts it ahead of Texas Tech. BYU scored 20 straight points for a 20-14 lead, including Legend Glasker's 75-yard catch, then didn't score again. Bear Bachmeier threw four interceptions, two in the end zone in the fourth quarter, the first ending a 13-play drive with under five minutes left. Baylor visits Saturday.

Unchanged. Texas Tech has two wins over teams ranked here, Houston by two and Arizona by eight, both in Lubbock, and its road wins are at Oregon State and Colorado. The loss is 37-24 at Cincinnati, 5-4. BYU moved past it because BYU's win over Notre Dame is better than either of Tech's. West Virginia scored three straight touchdowns in the third quarter for a 48-41 lead and gained 582 yards. Stone Harrington's 46-yard field goal cut it to four, Thomas Castellanos hit Kenny Johnson for 5 yards and the lead with 2:44 left, and Trey White's safety made it 53-48. Castellanos threw for 362 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 102. Next: at Oklahoma State.

Up two while idle. USC's 30-18 win over Ohio State is its best, and now that the Buckeyes have a third loss their résumé is close enough to USC's for the head-to-head result to decide it. USC also beat Louisiana, 6-3, and three 5-4 teams, including 31-23 at Penn State. The losses are 41-27 at home to Oregon, three places ahead, and 24-7 at Wisconsin, which is 10 places back with three losses and only one win over a team ranked here. Down nine after a second straight loss. Ohio State's road wins at Indiana, 8-1, and Iowa, 7-2, still give it a better top than Indiana's, and its 19-15 win in Bloomington keeps it ahead of the Hoosiers. But with three losses its résumé is now close enough to USC's that the Trojans' 30-18 win decides it. Bo Jackson's two first-quarter touchdown runs put Ohio State up 14-0, and then it gave up 38 straight points. It ran for 53 yards and went 0 for 4 on fourth down; two of those were incompletions thrown to Jeremiah Smith, who still caught seven passes for 133 yards. Luke Fahey went 36 of 50 for 360 yards. Down nine while idle. Indiana's résumé didn't change, but none of its wins is over a team ranked here, and four of the five FBS teams with winning records it has beaten lost Saturday: Northwestern, now 6-3, and Nebraska, Michigan and Minnesota, all 5-4. Nine teams that were behind Indiana last week are ahead of it now, and each has at least one win over a ranked team. The loss is 19-15 at home to Ohio State, which keeps the Buckeyes a place ahead. More wins over teams with winning records and one close loss put Indiana ahead of Kentucky. Indiana has allowed 14.0 points a game to FBS teams, and Tobi Osunsanmi has 10 sacks. USC visits Saturday.

Down six. Kentucky still has two wins over teams ranked here, both 35-34 in overtime, at South Carolina and over LSU, plus 21-13 at Oklahoma, and the South Carolina result keeps it a place ahead of the Gamecocks. But both losses are by 28, to Alabama at home and Saturday's at Tennessee, and Indiana, with more wins over teams with winning records and one close loss, is a place ahead. Kentucky held the ball for 35:17 and settled for two field goals. Kenny Minchey was intercepted in the end zone in the first quarter, Jovantae Barnes lost a fumble in the second, and Minchey was sacked and stripped at his 47 late in the third, down 13-6. Down one. South Carolina's 27-24 win over Tennessee, now eighth, is better than any win Indiana, Kentucky or Houston has, and it won by 19 at Florida and by 17 at Oklahoma. But it has three losses, one of them 41-34 at home to Mississippi State, 4-5, and the overtime loss to Kentucky puts it behind the Wildcats. Texas A&M led 9-7 on three David Olano field goals and outgained South Carolina 457-360, but it didn't score a touchdown and went 0 for 2 on fourth down. Malik Orsan's 43-yard field goal put the Gamecocks ahead with 8:14 left, and LaNorris Sellers ran 41 yards for a touchdown with 1:19 to go. Next: at Arkansas.

Both losses came on the road to teams ranked above it, by two at Texas Tech and by eight at Utah, and the head-to-head result keeps Oklahoma State behind it. Conner Weigman threw touchdown passes of 8 and 31 yards to Amare Thomas for a 14-0 lead. The losses are 31-14 at home to Ohio State and 13-10 at Minnesota, 5-4. Ole Miss, a place behind, has slightly better wins but three losses. Hank Brown ran 21 yards for a touchdown and threw 24 yards to Tony Diaz for a 14-0 lead, and 11 seconds after Northwestern's first points, Braeden Jackson returned the kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. But it has lost three of its last six, and Saturday's 35-point home loss joins a 52-28 loss at Florida, now 5-4, which keeps it behind Iowa and the teams above. Up two. Boise has four wins over FBS teams with winning records, Memphis, 7-2, and Texas State at home and Western Michigan and Fresno State on the road, and the only loss is 34-27 at Oregon, ninth. LSU's best wins are about as good, but LSU has three losses, so Boise moves a place ahead of the Tigers. Max Cutforth threw 73 yards to Dylan Riley on Boise's second play, 52 seconds in, and Boise led 29-10 in the second quarter. Cutforth went 16 of 19 for 317 yards and four touchdowns, Riley ran 19 times for 192 yards and two more, and Boise gained 669 yards without a turnover. Oregon State visits Saturday.

L 34-35 at Kentucky
W 31-0 Miss. State
W 38-17 at Auburn
L 13-31 Alabama
Down three. All three of LSU's losses are to teams ranked ahead of it, by eight at Ole Miss, by one in overtime at Kentucky and Saturday's by 18 at home to Alabama. Its best wins, 51-10 over Clemson, 45-14 over Louisiana Tech, 7-2, and 38-17 at Auburn, are about as good as Boise State's, and Boise has one loss. LSU led 13-10 after Dilin Jones' 5-yard run with 2:44 left in the third quarter and outgained Alabama 457-285, but it went 0 for 4 on fourth down and gave up three touchdown passes in just over nine minutes. Sam Leavitt threw for 380 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Texas visits Saturday.

W 24-20 at Penn State
W 31-3 Mich. State
L 7-17 at UCLA
W 24-7 USC
L 0-30 at Iowa
W 31-10 Rutgers
New. Wisconsin's 24-7 win over USC, now 12th, is its best, and it won 24-20 at Penn State, 5-4. All three losses are to teams ranked ahead of it, 41-13 to Notre Dame at Lambeau Field, 17-7 at UCLA and 30-0 at Iowa, and the last keeps it four places behind the Hawkeyes. It was left out last week with nearly the same résumé, and Florida's and Missouri's losses opened room for it. Rutgers tied it 10-10 with 3:21 left in the half. Gavin Lahm kicked three field goals, Ryan Hopkins threw an 11-yard touchdown and the two-point pass late in the third, and Jacob Harris caught a 66-yarder early in the fourth. Next: at Maryland.

L 32-35 at Houston
W 57-24 Colorado
L 49-51 at Iowa State
W 66-28 at Kansas St.
New. Oklahoma State beat Oregon 39-31 in Stillwater, and Oregon's win at Ohio State made that the best win of any team in the bottom five. It also won 41-24 at West Virginia, 5-4. The losses are why it's this low: 24-10 at Tulsa, 5-4, 51-49 at Iowa State, 4-5, and 35-32 at Houston, which keeps it behind the Cougars. Wisconsin's losses are all to ranked teams, which keeps the Badgers a place ahead. At Kansas State, Oklahoma State led 49-14 at halftime. Caleb Hawkins ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns and caught another, Drew Mestemaker threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns, and LaDainian Fields intercepted two passes. Texas Tech visits Saturday.

beat Merrimack 77-0 at home
W 38-16 Akron
W 38-36 at Purdue
L 20-33 Miami
W 30-27 at Louisville
W 57-3 Stanford
W 38-14 at NC State
W 41-7 at California
W 51-7 Virginia
W 77-0 Merrimack
Up one. Wake Forest's résumé is the same as last week's: one win over an FBS team with a winning record, 30-27 at Louisville, road wins at Purdue, NC State and California, and a 33-20 home loss to Miami. Saturday's 77-0 win over Merrimack, an FCS team, counts for little. It moves past Arizona because the Louisville win is better than any Arizona has and Wake has one fewer loss. Oklahoma State's win over Oregon puts the Cowboys a place ahead. Steele Pizzella went 23 of 28 for 432 yards and three touchdowns, Gio Lopez didn't appear in the box score, and Wake gained 730 yards. Next: at SMU, 7-2.

Arizona

beat TCU 29-28 at home
W 35-7 N. Arizona
L 17-28 at BYU

W 34-24 at Wash. State
W 34-7 Cincinnati
W 52-31 at West Virginia
W 39-3 Iowa State
L 26-34 at Texas Tech
W 29-28 TCU
Down one. Arizona's best wins are 34-7 over Cincinnati and 52-31 at West Virginia, both 5-4, and both losses came on the road to teams ranked above it, 28-17 at BYU and 34-26 at Texas Tech. That holds off Louisville and Illinois, which have better wins but worse losses. TCU led 28-20 with 6:35 left. Noah Fifita drove Arizona 75 yards, recovering Quincy Craig's fumble at the TCU 15 along the way, and hit Craig for a 15-yard touchdown with 1:45 left; the two-point pass failed. Zuri Watson recovered a muffed kickoff at the TCU 26, Michael Salgado-Medina kicked a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds left, and Tyrese Boss intercepted the next pass. Utah visits Saturday.
Next edition: Sunday, November 15, after Week 11.
