Georgia won 20-17 at Alabama and moves from 15th to second, with the best win anyone has this season. Indiana won by the same score at Nebraska, scoring twice in the last 12 minutes, and keeps No. 1 under the champion rule. Texas lost 27-24 to Oklahoma on a field goal as time ran out and falls to fifth. Kentucky beat LSU in overtime and jumps 10 places, UCLA returns at 12th after winning at Oregon, and Florida falls 10 places after losing at home to South Carolina.
Alabama is third, ahead of an unbeaten Miami, because it has two road wins over teams with one loss and lost by three to the team now second. Texas is fifth, ahead of an unbeaten Notre Dame, because it has three wins over one-loss teams. Missouri falls five places after a 21-point win because Florida's loss took value from its best win. Utah drops out at 5-0: with Iowa State now 3-3, it has no win over a team with a winning record.
Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Utah drop out; UCLA, Oklahoma, Wake Forest and Iowa come in. Next weekend: Ohio State at Indiana, Notre Dame at BYU, Alabama at Tennessee, Florida at Texas, Mississippi State at LSU, Missouri at Ole Miss, Kentucky at Oklahoma, Oklahoma State at Houston, Nebraska at Oregon and Wisconsin at UCLA.
Method
Results only. Preseason polls, recruiting rankings, coaching hires and offseason talk don't count. The inputs are who a team beat, where the game was played, and by how much.
Who you beat matters most: a win over a good team outweighs any blowout of a bad one, and opponent quality is judged by how those opponents have played this season. A road win counts for more than a neutral-site win, and a neutral-site win for more than a home win. A close road loss to a top team can rank above an unbeaten record against weak opponents. Margin breaks ties between similar résumés; it won't lift a team past one with better wins.
One exception: the defending national champion holds No. 1 until it loses. Every Sunday morning the Top 25 is rebuilt from scratch, not shuffled from last week's list. Six games is still a thin résumé, so expect more movement in September than in November. When a placement is an editorial call that departs from this method, the team's note says so.

Heisman watch
Five players, ranked on the same terms as our NFL MVP watch: production adjusted for efficiency and mistakes, the defenses faced, how much of the offense runs through them and how much help they have. College adds one more: level of competition. Numbers against FCS teams count for little, and a win over a weak FBS team counts for less than one over a good team. Team record counts, but only a little. Every position is eligible; anyone who isn't a quarterback has to be exceptional. Six games is still a thin sample.
1
Jeremiah Smith
WR · Ohio State (5-1) · Last week 1=
48 catches, 916 yards, 11 TD
Still first, because nobody here has done more against good defenses. Smith caught 19 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns at Texas and at Iowa, two defenses that have allowed about 14 points a game to their other FBS opponents. Against Maryland he caught four passes for 93 yards, two of them touchdowns from 33 and 40 yards in the first half. He's 16 receiving yards behind Oregon State's Jesse Legree for the FBS lead. The case against: a receiver needs a quarterback, Julian Sayin is averaging 10.9 yards per attempt, and Ohio State lost at Texas. Next: at Indiana, which has allowed 71 points in five games against FBS teams.
Second while Miami was idle. Nobody makes fewer mistakes: 84.2 percent completions, the highest in FBS among passers with 100 attempts, 10.8 yards per attempt, and no interceptions or lost fumbles. His 30-of-34, three-touchdown game at Wake Forest looks better now that the Deacons are 5-1. The case against: three of his touchdown passes came against Florida A&M, an FCS team, and every FBS defense he's faced has allowed at least 19 points a game to its other FBS opponents. Florida State visits Saturday.
Up two. Three more touchdown passes against Stanford, from 3, 70 and 30 yards, on 14 of 20 passing, and he's at 19 touchdowns accounted for with one interception, all against FBS teams, at 9.6 yards per attempt. Against the best defense he's seen, Wisconsin, which has allowed 11 points a game to its other FBS opponents, he went 19 of 29 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. The case against: he hasn't thrown for more than 253 yards in a game, and an offense that ran for 361 yards on Saturday gives him plenty of help. Next: at BYU.
New. Indiana trailed 17-6 at Nebraska with 12 minutes left when Hoover hit Nick Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown on the Hoosiers' next snap, then found him again from 44 yards on the next possession for the winning points. He has 17 touchdown passes and no interceptions in 129 attempts, at 10.6 yards per attempt. The case against: four of the touchdowns came against Howard, an FCS team, he went 12 of 22 on Saturday while Indiana converted one third down in 10, and a running game with two backs over 550 yards does a lot of the work. Ohio State visits Saturday.
Down one while idle, passed by two quarterbacks who make fewer mistakes. All five of his games have come against FBS teams, and he's produced against the good defenses: 360 yards and three touchdowns against Missouri, which held Texas A&M to six points on Saturday, and 258 yards and three touchdowns against Alabama. The case against: six turnovers in five games, four interceptions and two lost fumbles, three of them in the Alabama game, which Mississippi State lost by 33 at home. Next: at LSU.
Also considered: Gunner Stockton, Georgia (18 of 22 for 249 yards and a rushing touchdown in the win at Alabama, but eight of his 14 touchdown passes came against Tennessee State, an FCS team, and Western Kentucky); Julian Sayin, Ohio State (10.9 yards per attempt and 17 touchdown passes against two interceptions, all against FBS teams, but his case overlaps with Smith's); Keelon Russell, Alabama (16 of 30 for 185 yards and a lost fumble against Georgia, his third lost fumble of the season); Colin Simmons, Texas (9.5 sacks, but 5.5 of them came in one game, at Tennessee).

W 52-16 N. Texas
W 55-0 Howard
W 38-0 W. Kentucky
W 29-23 Northwestern
W 47-15 at Rutgers
W 20-17 at Nebraska
Still No. 1 under the champion rule, and the résumé would now put the Hoosiers near the top without it: two wins over teams with one loss, Northwestern at home and Nebraska on the road. It nearly went the other way. Nebraska led 17-6 after Anthony Colandrea's 39-yard run with 12:01 left. Josh Hoover hit Nick Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown on Indiana's next snap and found him again from 44 yards on the next possession, and Nebraska's last two drives ended on downs, the second on a Tobi Osunsanmi sack. Indiana converted 1 of 10 third downs and had the ball for 20:27. Ohio State visits Saturday.

W 70-20 W. Kentucky
W 45-17 at Arkansas
W 41-13 Oklahoma
W 38-14 Vanderbilt
W 20-17 at Alabama
Up 13, with the best win of the season. Georgia led 10-0, trailed 14-10 at halftime after EJ Crowell scored on the last play of the half, and went ahead on Gunner Stockton's 14-yard run in the third quarter. After Alabama tied it 17-17 and Peyton Woodring missed from 39 yards, Georgia drove 84 yards and Woodring kicked a 23-yarder with 5:25 left. Alabama punted with 3:10 to go and never got the ball back. Stockton went 18 of 22 for 249 yards, and Georgia ran for 206. The other good win is 41-13 over Oklahoma, which just beat Texas. Indiana's two wins over one-loss teams leave nothing indisputable enough to override the champion rule. Auburn visits Saturday.

W 45-17 at Kentucky
W 50-36 Florida St.
W 49-18 S. Carolina
W 56-23 at Miss. State
L 17-20 Georgia
Down one after losing by three at home to the team now second. The rest of the résumé didn't change: Alabama is still the only team with two road wins over teams that have one loss or none, 45-17 at Kentucky, which just beat LSU, and 56-23 at Mississippi State. That's why it stays ahead of an unbeaten Miami. On Saturday the offense stalled. Keelon Russell went 16 of 30 for 185 yards and lost a fumble, and after Conor Talty's 39-yard field goal tied it with 5:07 left in the third quarter, Alabama didn't score again. Georgia ran for 206 yards. Next: at Tennessee.

idle
W 45-6 at Stanford
W 77-7 Florida A&M
W 33-20 at Wake Forest
W 52-3 C. Michigan
W 41-13 at Clemson
Unchanged while idle. Wake Forest won 38-14 at NC State and is 5-1, its only loss the 33-20 game against Miami in Winston-Salem, so the best road win got better. Darian Mensah went 30 of 34 in that one. Miami has allowed 42 points in four games against FBS teams, and its three road wins include Clemson by 28. It sits behind Alabama because one road win over a one-loss team isn't two, and ahead of Texas because it hasn't lost. Florida State visits Saturday.

W 59-7 Texas St.
W 24-23 Ohio State
W 30-6 UTSA
W 20-17 at Tennessee
L 24-27 Oklahoma (N)
Down two after losing to Oklahoma in a game Texas led 17-7 at halftime and outgained the Sooners 382-238. Oklahoma scored on a blocked punt and on Peyton Bowen's 42-yard interception return, which made it 24-17 with 10:07 left. Arch Manning tied it with a 15-yard pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr., Gianni Spetic missed from 53 yards with 1:54 left, and Courtland Guillory intercepted Manning with 19 seconds to go. Tate Sandell's 47-yarder ended it. Texas still has three wins over teams with one loss, Ohio State, Tennessee and UTSA, more than anyone, which keeps it ahead of Notre Dame. A loss to a 3-2 team puts it behind Miami. Florida visits Saturday.

W 52-0 Rice
W 27-10 Mich. State
W 49-10 at Purdue
W 37-26 at N. Carolina
W 58-7 Stanford
Down one, because Texas has better wins. Notre Dame's best is still 41-13 over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, and the 37-26 win at North Carolina looks better after the Tar Heels won at Pittsburgh. Saturday was over early. Jonaz Walton ran 97 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, Notre Dame led 37-0 at halftime and finished with 361 rushing yards and 598 in all, and CJ Carr went 14 of 20 for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Walton had 181 yards on 13 carries. Notre Dame didn't turn it over for the second straight week. Next: at BYU, which is 5-0.

W 56-3 Ball State
L 23-24 at Texas
W 59-3 Kent State
W 42-19 Illinois
W 31-14 at Iowa
W 45-16 Maryland
Down one only because Georgia moved past. The case is unchanged: a 17-point win at Iowa, now 5-1, and a one-point loss at Texas. Maryland gained 146 yards. Julian Sayin threw four touchdown passes, two to Jeremiah Smith from 33 and 40 yards, and one interception, which Daniel Wingate returned 52 yards for Maryland's only touchdown of the second half. Bo Jackson ran for 107 yards and two scores. The Iowa road win and the quality of the loss keep Ohio State ahead of an unbeaten Texas Tech. Next: at Indiana.

W 33-10 Abilene Chr.
W 35-24 at Oregon St.

Up one while idle. The résumé held: Houston, beaten 28-26 in Lubbock, won 35-16 at Kansas State and is 5-1, and Oregon State, beaten 35-24 in Corvallis, scored 66 on San Diego State. Oregon State's four wins have come against an FCS team and three teams with losing records, though, so the second-best win doesn't carry much weight. Texas Tech stays behind Ohio State, whose loss is by one point at Texas, and moves ahead of Mississippi State, whose wins go a little deeper but which lost by 33 at home. Arizona State visits Saturday.

W 38-13 at Minnesota
W 41-34 at S. Carolina

Down two while idle, as Georgia jumped over and Texas Tech moved past. The case is still 31-24 over Missouri, which beat Texas A&M by 21 and is 5-1, plus road wins at South Carolina and Minnesota. South Carolina helped by winning 38-19 at Florida; Minnesota didn't, losing 41-13 at Purdue. The 56-23 home loss to Alabama is why the Bulldogs aren't higher. The Missouri win keeps them ahead of the Tigers, and it's a better win than anything Kentucky has, which keeps them a place ahead of the Wildcats, who also lost big at home to Alabama. Next: at LSU.

L 17-45 Alabama
W 31-21 at Texas A&M
W 45-21 S. Alabama
W 35-34 at S. Carolina
W 35-34 LSU
Up 10, the second-biggest rise of the week. Kentucky's wins now hold up as well as anyone's outside the top nine: LSU, plus road wins at Texas A&M and at South Carolina, which won 38-19 at Florida on Saturday. LSU scored first in overtime on Sam Leavitt's 15-yard run. CJ Baxter answered from a yard out and Kenny Minchey ran in the two-point conversion, a week after his two-point pass beat South Carolina. Adam Zouagui's 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds left had forced overtime. Baxter ran for 123 yards and Kentucky didn't turn it over. Two one-point wins and a 28-point home loss to Alabama keep it from going higher. Next: at Oklahoma.

W 63-7 Utah Tech
W 28-17 Arizona
W 41-23 at Colorado St.
W 17-10 at TCU
W 24-10 Iowa State
Up two. The 28-17 win over Arizona keeps looking better: the Wildcats won 52-31 at West Virginia and are 5-1, their only loss in Provo. On Saturday Bear Bachmeier went 22 of 30 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 75-yarder to Legend Glasker late in the third quarter for a 21-3 lead, and ran for 109 more. Iowa State gained 200 yards. Arizona is BYU's only win over a team with a winning record, which is why the Cougars sit behind Kentucky's deeper list. Notre Dame visits Saturday.

UCLA

W 45-24 at California
W 28-10 San Diego St.
W 52-38 Purdue
W 54-3 at Maryland
W 17-15 at Oregon
New. Last week UCLA dropped out because it hadn't beaten a team with a winning record. Now it has won at Oregon, whose wins include Boise State and USC. It wasn't pretty. Oregon turned it over seven times, five on fumbles, and UCLA three. The Bruins led 17-6 after Ty Dieffenbach's 9-yard touchdown pass to Wayne Knight early in the fourth quarter, Oregon scored with 2:16 left and missed the two-point try, and its last drive ended with a fumbled lateral at the UCLA 33. Knight ran for 103 yards. That's five wins, all against FBS teams, three of them on the road. Wisconsin visits Saturday.

W 38-21 at Kansas
W 27-17 Troy
L 24-31 at Miss. State
W 45-17 Florida
W 27-6 Texas A&M
Down five after a 21-point win, because the best win lost value and the teams around Missouri added better ones. Florida, beaten 45-17 in Columbia, lost at home to South Carolina and is 4-2. Kentucky beat LSU, UCLA won at Oregon, and BYU's win over Arizona keeps improving. Saturday was Jamal Roberts again: 34 carries, 222 yards and two touchdowns, the last from 54 yards with 2:49 left. Texas A&M ran for 29 yards and threw two interceptions. The seven-point loss at Mississippi State keeps Missouri behind the Bulldogs. Next: at Ole Miss.

L 10-24 at Tulsa
W 39-31 Oregon
W 59-0 Murray St.
W 41-24 at West Virginia
W 42-28 UCF
Down three after a 14-point win, mostly because of teams moving past. The case is still 39-31 over Oregon, and that head-to-head result keeps the Cowboys ahead of the Ducks even though Oregon's other wins are better. The 24-10 loss at Tulsa, now 3-3, is still the main reason they aren't higher. UCF tied it 21-21 at halftime. Sam Keltner kicked field goals from 40 and 29 yards, Evan Jackson returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-21 with 10:32 left, and Drew Mestemaker went 19 of 28 for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Next: at Houston.

Down three after a two-point home loss, and still ahead of Boise State and USC because it beat both. Oregon lost the ball seven times against UCLA, five on fumbles. Dylan Raiola went 6 of 19 for 43 yards with two interceptions; Brock Thomas went 11 of 15 for 156 and threw a 44-yard touchdown to Evan Stewart with 2:16 left, but the two-point try failed. The last drive ended with a lateral fumbled away at the UCLA 33. On wins alone Oregon would be higher, with 34-27 over Boise State and 41-27 at USC. The loss in Stillwater keeps it behind Oklahoma State. Nebraska visits Saturday.

Up seven. Boise has three wins over teams with winning records: Memphis, 5-1, by 18 at home, and road wins at Western Michigan and Fresno State, both 4-2. Only Texas, Alabama, Indiana and Florida have as many. In Fresno on Saturday, Dylan Riley ran for 150 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown, and caught a 44-yard touchdown eight seconds into the fourth quarter for a 35-20 lead. Boise ran for 274 yards and didn't turn it over, and Fresno got within seven twice. The loss is by seven at Oregon, which keeps the Broncos behind the Ducks. Idle Saturday.

New, with the best win of any team ranked below fifth. Oklahoma beat Texas while gaining 238 yards: Dakoda Fields scored on a blocked punt, Peyton Bowen returned an interception 42 yards for a 24-17 lead with 10:07 left, and after Courtland Guillory's interception with 19 seconds to go, Tate Sandell kicked a 47-yard field goal as time ran out. The other good win is 14-6 over New Mexico, 4-1. The losses are by seven at Michigan, which is 3-2, and by 28 at Georgia, and two losses are why the Sooners start here rather than higher. Kentucky visits Saturday.

W 35-16 at Kansas St.
Up one. Houston's only loss is 28-26 at Texas Tech, and its best wins are 33-20 over Oregon State and Saturday's 19-point win at Kansas State. Conner Weigman went 19 of 30 for 242 yards and four touchdowns, all to Patrick Overmyer, from 1, 2, 8 and 2 yards, and Houston led 28-3 in the third quarter. It gained 475 yards and didn't turn it over. Oregon State is 4-2 but hasn't beaten a team with a winning record, which limits what the best win is worth and keeps Houston behind teams with better wins. Oklahoma State visits Saturday.

Penn State kicked a field goal to get within 24-23 early in the fourth quarter, and Jayden Maiava answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kayden Dixon-Wyatt with 11:11 left, the last score. Maiava went 21 of 33 for 301 yards and three touchdowns, USC didn't turn it over, and Penn State ran for 68 yards. The best wins are Fresno State and Louisiana, both 4-2, by 39 and 19 at home, and the loss is by 14 at home to Oregon. Boise State lost to the same Oregon team by seven, on the road. Idle Saturday.

Down 10 after a second straight loss. Florida led South Carolina 10-7 in the second quarter, but LaNorris Sellers threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, and after Patrick Durkin's 48-yard field goal made it 17-13, the Gamecocks scored the next 21 points. Florida turned it over three times. The Gators stay in on what they've beaten: Ole Miss and FAU, both 4-1, and Auburn on the road. Only four other teams have three wins over teams with winning records. The 24-point win over Ole Miss keeps them a place ahead of the Rebels. Next: at Texas.

Down five after a 35-point road win, and the reason is head-to-head. Ole Miss's best win is 32-24 over LSU, and its only loss is 52-28 at Florida, which keeps it a place behind the Gators even though Florida has lost twice since. On Saturday in Nashville it led 42-3 at halftime. Trinidad Chambliss threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, Suntarine Perkins scored on a fumble recovery, and Vanderbilt turned it over four times. None of the three is better than 3-3, which is why it starts this low. NC State led 14-10 at halftime.
