By Taurean Matador · . Updated Sunday morning, October 4: the Heisman watch was reordered, with Jeremiah Smith moving from third to first and Keelon Russell from first to third.
Alabama is the story of the week. The Crimson Tide won 56-23 at Mississippi State, their second road win over a team that is now 4-1, and move from fifth to second ahead of an idle Texas. Missouri beat Florida 45-17 and jumps 16 places to eighth; Florida falls to 10th. Ohio State moves up seven after winning 31-14 at Iowa, and Miami up six after 41-13 at Clemson. Indiana keeps No. 1 under the champion rule after a 47-15 win at Rutgers.
Georgia is 5-0 and 15th, down eight after beating Vanderbilt by 24. That's the method, not a judgment on how good Georgia looks: its best win is over a 3-2 team, and every team above it has beaten a team with one loss or none. Ohio State is sixth, one place ahead of Mississippi State, which has one more good win but lost by 33 at home; Ohio State's loss is by one point at Texas. Saturday in Tuscaloosa settles more than one argument.
Five teams drop out: Iowa, UCLA, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. UCLA didn't play, but it has yet to beat a team with a winning record. In come Pittsburgh, USC, Houston, Boise State and Arizona. Next weekend: Georgia at Alabama, Indiana at Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma in Dallas, UCLA at Oregon, LSU at Kentucky and USC at Penn State.
Method
Results only. Preseason polls, recruiting rankings, coaching hires and offseason talk don't count. The inputs are who a team beat, where the game was played, and by how much.
Who you beat matters most: a win over a good team outweighs any blowout of a bad one, and opponent quality is judged by how those opponents have played this season. A road win counts for more than a neutral-site win, and a neutral-site win for more than a home win. A close road loss to a top team can rank above an unbeaten record against weak opponents. Margin breaks ties between similar résumés; it won't lift a team past one with better wins.
One exception: the defending national champion holds No. 1 until it loses. Every Sunday morning the Top 25 is rebuilt from scratch, not shuffled from last week's list. Five games is still a thin résumé, so expect more movement in September than in November. When a placement is an editorial call that departs from this method, the team's note says so.
Corrections
Last week's Heisman watch said Jeremiah Smith's 617 receiving yards were 51 percent of Ohio State's passing yards; they were 51 percent of Julian Sayin's 1,206 and 42 percent of the team's 1,461.

Heisman watch
Five players, ranked on the same terms as our NFL MVP watch: production adjusted for efficiency and mistakes, the defenses faced, how much of the offense runs through them and how much help they have. College adds one more: level of competition. Numbers against FCS teams count for little, and a win over a weak FBS team counts for less than one over a good team. Team record counts, but only a little. Every position is eligible; anyone who isn't a quarterback has to be exceptional. Five games is still a thin sample.

Jeremiah Smith
WR · Ohio State (4-1) · Last week 3▲2
44 catches, 823 yards, 9 TD
Moves to the top because nobody here has done more against better defenses. Ohio State's two toughest games were at Texas, which has allowed 53 points in four games, and at Iowa, which had allowed 32 in four before Saturday. Smith caught 19 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns in those two games, 61 percent of Ohio State's passing yards. No other receiver has topped 72 yards against Texas, and his 206 at Iowa are the most anyone has had against the Hawkeyes. He leads FBS by 82 receiving yards. The case against: a receiver needs a quarterback, Julian Sayin is averaging 10.8 yards per attempt, and Ohio State lost the Texas game. Maryland visits Saturday.
Second again, and ahead of Keelon Russell because neither has faced a strong defense and Mensah makes fewer mistakes: 84.2 percent completions, the best in FBS among passers with 100 attempts, 10.8 yards per attempt, no interceptions in 133 throws and no lost fumbles. At Clemson he hit Cooper Barkate for a 61-yard touchdown on Miami's opening possession and ran 34 yards for another. The case against: three of his touchdown passes came against Florida A&M, an FCS team, and without that game he's at 10.1 yards per attempt. Malachi Toney's 604 receiving yards are real help. Miami is idle Saturday.
Up from fifth after outplaying Kamario Taylor head to head. At Mississippi State he went 16 of 22 for 285 yards and three touchdowns and ran 17 yards for a fourth. Over the last three games he's 60 of 79 for 970 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions, all against FBS teams. The case against: all five defenses he's faced have allowed at least 25 points a game against FBS teams, his 11 touchdown passes are the fewest of any quarterback here, he has two interceptions and two lost fumbles, and a defense that has scored in each of the last two games is a lot of help. Georgia is next.
Down from first. His 17 touchdown passes still lead FBS, and the defenses he's faced include Alabama, Missouri and Minnesota. But Saturday was his worst game of the season. He threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Anthony Evans III, and also threw two interceptions, one returned 30 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and lost a fumble. He finished with minus-26 rushing yards. The case against: six turnovers in five games, five of them in the last three. Idle Saturday.
New. Four touchdown passes at North Carolina, plus a 3-yard run that put Notre Dame back ahead after the Tar Heels' kickoff return made it 21-20. He has 16 touchdowns accounted for, one interception and 9.7 yards per attempt, all against FBS teams. The case against: Wisconsin is the only opponent with a winning record, he hasn't thrown for more than 253 yards in a game, and an offense that ran for 241 yards on Saturday doesn't run entirely through him. Stanford visits Saturday.
Also considered: Julian Sayin, Ohio State (10.8 yards per attempt, 13 TD passes and one interception, all against FBS teams, but his case overlaps with Smith's); Josh Hoover, Indiana (15 TD passes and no interceptions, but four of the touchdowns came against Howard, an FCS team); Michael Hawkins Jr., West Virginia (11 rushing TD, tied for the FBS lead and the most for a quarterback, and 18 total TD, but 56.6 percent passing for a 3-2 team); Jadan Baugh, Florida (11 rushing TD, tied for the FBS lead, but 12 carries for 13 yards at Missouri).

Indiana
5-0Last week 1=
won 47-15 at Rutgers
W 52-16 N. Texas
W 55-0 Howard
W 38-0 W. Kentucky
W 29-23 Northwestern
W 47-15 at Rutgers
Still No. 1 under the champion rule, and still the only team in the top 10 that couldn't get there on its résumé. The best win is Northwestern, now 3-1, by six at home. Saturday was what it should be against a 1-4 team: Josh Hoover went 20 of 27 for 251 yards and four touchdowns, Turbo Richard ran for 204 yards on 13 carries, and Indiana led 37-0 before Rutgers scored late in the third quarter. The Hoosiers gained 593 yards and weren't penalized once. Next: at Nebraska, also 5-0, which is the first chance to add a win that matters.

Alabama
5-0Last week 5▲3
won 56-23 at Mississippi State
W 48-10 E. Carolina
W 45-17 at Kentucky
W 50-36 Florida St.
W 49-18 S. Carolina
W 56-23 at Miss. State
Up three, and the best résumé in the country. Alabama has two road wins over teams that are now 4-1, by 28 at Kentucky and by 33 at Mississippi State. On Saturday it led 14-0 six and a half minutes in, the second touchdown a 30-yard interception return by Dijon Lee Jr., and its lead never dropped below seven after that. Keelon Russell went 16 of 22 for 285 yards and three touchdowns and ran 17 yards for another. Mississippi State turned it over four times and ran for 18 yards. Georgia visits Saturday.

Texas
4-0Last week 2▼1
idle
W 59-7 Texas St.
W 24-23 Ohio State
W 30-6 UTSA
W 20-17 at Tennessee
Down one without playing, because Alabama added the best road win of the season. The Texas résumé got better while it sat: Ohio State won 31-14 at Iowa, Tennessee beat Auburn and UTSA won at Rice, so all three are 4-1. No one else has three wins over teams with one loss or none. But only one of the three came away from home, and it was by three points, while Alabama has two road wins over 4-1 teams by 28 or more. Next: Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
4
Miami
5-0Last week 10▲6
won 41-13 at Clemson
W 45-6 at Stanford
W 77-7 Florida A&M
W 33-20 at Wake Forest
W 52-3 C. Michigan
W 41-13 at Clemson
Up six. Miami has three road wins over power-conference teams, and Saturday's was the most convincing. Darian Mensah hit Cooper Barkate for a 61-yard touchdown on Miami's opening possession and ran 34 yards for another early in the second quarter. Clemson ran for 55 yards, Miami didn't turn it over, and JJ Dunnigan's 39-yard interception return closed the scoring with 1:49 left. The closest game of the season is 13 points, at Wake Forest, now 4-1. Texas stays ahead on the Ohio State win. Miami is idle Saturday.

W 41-13 Wisconsin (N)
W 52-0 Rice
W 27-10 Mich. State
W 49-10 at Purdue
W 37-26 at N. Carolina
Up one. The case is still the 41-13 win over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, and Wisconsin is 4-1. Saturday got tight. Notre Dame led 21-7, then North Carolina scored with 21 seconds left in the half and returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards to make it 21-20. CJ Carr answered with a 3-yard touchdown run and threw his fourth touchdown pass six seconds into the fourth quarter. Notre Dame ran for 241 yards and didn't turn it over. North Carolina is 2-2, which is why Miami's road wins count for more. Stanford visits Saturday.
6
Ohio State
4-1Last week 13▲7
won 31-14 at Iowa
W 56-3 Ball State
L 23-24 at Texas
W 59-3 Kent State
W 42-19 Illinois
W 31-14 at Iowa
Up seven, with the road win it was missing. Iowa came in 4-0 and finished with 238 yards. Julian Sayin found Jeremiah Smith for a 12-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left in the half for a 17-6 lead, and Smith's 57-yard catch in the third quarter made it 24-6. Smith had 11 catches for 206 yards; Sayin went 20 of 27 for 324 and three touchdowns. Mississippi State has one more good win, but Ohio State has the best loss anyone has, by one point at Texas, and that's close enough for margin to decide it. Maryland visits Saturday.
7
Mississippi State
4-1Last week 4▼3
lost 56-23 to Alabama at home
W 62-13 La.-Monroe
W 38-13 at Minnesota
W 41-34 at S. Carolina
W 31-24 Missouri
L 23-56 Alabama
Down three. Alabama scored on an interception return six and a half minutes in and won by 33 in Starkville. Kamario Taylor threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, two to Anthony Evans III, who caught 12 passes for 166 yards, but Mississippi State turned it over four times and ran for 18 yards. The Bulldogs still have two wins over teams that are 4-1, by 25 at Minnesota and by seven over Missouri, and that keeps them ahead of the Tigers and everyone below. The gap to Ohio State is the size of the loss. Idle Saturday.
8
Missouri
4-1Last week 24▲16
beat Florida 45-17 at home
W 54-14 Ark.-Pine Bluff
W 38-21 at Kansas
W 27-17 Troy
L 24-31 at Miss. State
W 45-17 Florida
Up 16, the biggest move of the week. Florida arrived 4-0 with wins over Ole Miss and at Auburn and lost by 28. It was 10-10 with 4:26 left in the first half; Missouri scored the next 35 points. Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards and three touchdowns, the last an 80-yarder early in the fourth quarter, and Austin Simmons went 23 of 30 for 340 yards. Missouri gained 560 yards and didn't turn it over. The seven-point loss at Mississippi State keeps the Tigers one place behind the Bulldogs. Texas A&M visits Saturday.
9
Texas Tech

W 33-10 Abilene Chr.
W 35-24 at Oregon St.
W 28-26 Houston
W 49-14 Sam Houston
W 29-7 at Colorado
Up six, mostly on what it had already done. The best win is still 28-26 over Houston, which rallied past UCF on Saturday and is 4-1. Add road wins at Oregon State and Colorado and it's an unbeaten résumé with one good win and nothing to apologize for. Saturday's win was the defense's. Texas Tech trailed 7-3 at halftime, then intercepted Colorado four times; Brice Pollock had two, and John Curry's, returned for a touchdown, made it 22-7 with 7:10 left. The offense gained 315 yards and Will Hammond threw for 134. Idle Saturday.

Florida
4-1Last week 3▼7
lost 45-17 at Missouri
W 66-21 FAU
W 52-3 Campbell
W 44-39 at Auburn
W 52-28 Ole Miss
L 17-45 at Missouri
Down seven after a 28-point loss in Columbia. Florida tied it 10-10 with 4:26 left in the first half and didn't score again until 47 seconds remained. Jadan Baugh, who had 11 rushing touchdowns in four games, ran 12 times for 13 yards, and Florida finished with 42 rushing yards. The wins over Ole Miss and at Auburn still hold up, and they're why the Gators stay in the top 10. The head-to-head loss puts them behind Missouri, and a 28-point loss puts them behind an unbeaten Texas Tech with similar wins. South Carolina visits Saturday.

Oklahoma State
3-1Last week 11=
idle
L 10-24 at Tulsa
W 39-31 Oregon
W 59-0 Murray St.
W 41-24 at West Virginia
Unchanged while idle. The case is the 39-31 win over Oregon and a 17-point win at West Virginia, and the head-to-head result is why the Cowboys stay one place ahead of the Ducks even though Oregon's other wins are better. The weekend didn't help. West Virginia lost 45-42 at Iowa State, and Tulsa, which beat Oklahoma State by 14 in Week 1, lost 45-44 in overtime at home to North Texas. That loss in Tulsa is the main reason the Cowboys aren't higher. UCF visits Saturday.
12
Oregon
3-1Last week 12=
idle
W 34-27 Boise State
L 31-39 at Oklahoma St.
W 84-0 Portland St.
W 41-27 at USC
Unchanged while idle, and behind Oklahoma State only because of the eight-point loss in Stillwater. On wins alone Oregon would be higher: 41-27 at USC, which beat Washington on Saturday and is 5-1, and 34-27 over Boise State, which beat Utah State and is 4-1. Dylan Raiola threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Dante Moore in the USC game. Head-to-head results count between close résumés, and these two are close. UCLA, 4-0, visits Saturday.
13
BYU
4-0Last week 23▲10
won 17-10 at TCU
W 63-7 Utah Tech
W 28-17 Arizona
W 41-23 at Colorado St.
W 17-10 at TCU
Up ten. The 28-17 win over Arizona looks better after Arizona beat Cincinnati 34-7, and BYU added a second road win, this one over a Big 12 team. It wasn't much to watch. BYU threw for 62 yards and Bear Bachmeier went 11 of 24, but he also ran for both touchdowns, the second from 21 yards with 2:06 left to make it 17-7. BYU didn't turn it over and held TCU to 259 yards. TCU is 2-3, so the road win proves less than the score suggests. Iowa State visits Friday night.
14
Pittsburgh
5-0New
won 35-33 at Virginia Tech
W 59-14 Miami (Ohio)
W 12-7 UCF
W 27-13 Syracuse
W 59-0 Bucknell
W 35-33 at Virginia Tech
New, after winning at a team that was 4-0. Virginia Tech outgained Pittsburgh 499-295 and Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for 434 yards, but the Hokies turned it over four times. Pitt trailed 24-14 late in the first half and scored the next 21 points. Then it hung on: a safety and a touchdown cut it to 35-33 with 10:07 left, and John Love missed a 36-yard field goal on the final play. The best of the other wins are over UCF and Syracuse, by five and 14 at home, which is why Pitt starts behind BYU. North Carolina visits Saturday.
15
Georgia
5-0Last week 7▼8
beat Vanderbilt 38-14 at home
W 63-3 Tennessee St.
W 70-20 W. Kentucky
W 45-17 at Arkansas
W 41-13 Oklahoma
W 38-14 Vanderbilt
Down eight after a 24-point win, and this is the placement readers will question most. The method asks who you beat. Georgia's best win is over Vanderbilt, which is 3-2, and every team above it has beaten a team with one loss or none. Georgia has won every game by 24 or more, but margin only breaks ties. On Saturday Gunner Stockton went 25 of 32 for 295 yards and three touchdowns, and Georgia scored the last 17 points. Saturday at Alabama is the chance to settle it.
16
Ole Miss
3-1Last week 8▼8
idle
W 41-38 Louisville (N)
W 41-9 Charlotte
W 32-24 LSU
L 28-52 at Florida
Down eight without playing. The 32-24 win over LSU still counts, and it's why Ole Miss stays one place ahead of the Tigers. The rest of the résumé has slipped. Louisville, beaten 41-38 in Nashville in Week 1, lost 31-28 at NC State and is 2-3, and Charlotte is 0-5. One good win, one close neutral-site win over a losing team and a 24-point loss at Florida add up to the middle of the list. Next: at Vanderbilt, which Georgia just beat by 24.
17
LSU
4-1Last week 9▼8
beat McNeese 63-14 at home
W 51-10 Clemson
W 45-14 La. Tech
L 24-32 at Ole Miss
W 35-6 Texas A&M
W 63-14 McNeese
Down eight, for reasons that have little to do with Saturday. LSU beat McNeese, an FCS team, by 49 and gained 731 yards, with Harlem Berry and Stacy Gage both over 100 rushing. Meanwhile Clemson, beaten 51-10 in Baton Rouge in Week 1, lost at home to Miami and is 3-2. The wins over Clemson and Texas A&M came by 41 and 29, but both teams are 3-2, and the eight-point loss at Ole Miss keeps LSU behind the Rebels. Next: at Kentucky.
18
USC
5-1New
beat Washington 25-21 at home
W 42-26 San José St.
W 39-0 Fresno St.
W 49-30 Louisiana
W 42-35 at Rutgers
L 27-41 Oregon
W 25-21 Washington
New. USC has four wins over teams with winning records, more than anyone, though three of those teams are from outside the power conferences and all four games were at home. Saturday was close. Washington led 21-10 early in the third quarter before Tanook Hines caught a 10-yard touchdown pass and Jahkeem Stewart returned a fumble 48 yards for a 22-21 lead. Caden Chittenden's 39-yard field goal with 9:36 left was the last score. The loss is by 14 at home to Oregon. Next: at Penn State.
19
Houston
4-1New
beat UCF 27-17 at home
W 33-20 Oregon St.
W 77-6 Southern
L 26-28 at Texas Tech
W 42-28 at Ga. Southern
W 27-17 UCF
New. Houston's only loss is 28-26 at Texas Tech, our No. 9, and its wins over Oregon State and UCF, both 3-2, came by 13 and 10. On Saturday it trailed UCF 17-0 midway through the third quarter. Conner Weigman then ran for three touchdowns in less than nine minutes of game time, the last with 10:15 left for the lead, and Jonathan Dimas added field goals from 40 and 46 yards. Weigman threw for 239 yards without an interception. Next: at Kansas State.

W 45-13 Youngstown St.
L 17-45 Alabama
W 31-21 at Texas A&M
W 45-21 S. Alabama
W 35-34 at S. Carolina
Unchanged after an overtime escape in Columbia. South Carolina led 17-0 in the second quarter and 34-27 after scoring first in overtime. Kenny Minchey answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Henry Boyer, then hit Willie Rodriguez for the two-point conversion that won it. Minchey threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, and Kentucky didn't turn it over. South Carolina is 2-3, so this adds little to the 31-21 win at Texas A&M, which is still the case for the Wildcats. LSU visits Saturday.

L 13-41 Notre Dame (N)
W 36-9 W. Illinois
W 54-10 E. Michigan
W 24-20 at Penn State
W 31-3 Mich. State
Down two after a 28-point win, because the teams around it added better results. Colton Joseph threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to Jacob Harris, ran 47 yards for another in the third, and finished with 145 yards passing and 141 rushing. Michigan State gained 235 yards and kicked one field goal. The résumé is the 24-20 win at Penn State, which lost by 21 at Northwestern on Saturday and is 3-2, against a 28-point loss to Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. Idle Saturday.
22
Tennessee

W 56-9 Furman
W 45-24 at Georgia Tech
W 42-9 Kennesaw St.
L 17-20 Texas
W 24-14 Auburn
Down one after beating Auburn. DeSean Bishop carried 34 times for 220 yards and three touchdowns. His runs of 25 and 44 yards in the third quarter turned a 7-3 halftime deficit into a 17-7 lead, and his 5-yard score with 3:30 left settled it. Tennessee threw for 86 yards and turned it over twice. Auburn is 3-2, which makes this the Volunteers' best win, and the three-point loss to Texas is still the best result on the résumé. Next: at Arkansas.
23
Boise State
4-1New
beat Utah State 37-18 at home
L 27-34 at Oregon
W 38-20 Memphis
W 38-24 South Dakota
W 32-7 at W. Michigan
W 37-18 Utah State
New. Boise State's loss is by seven at Oregon in Week 1, and its wins include Memphis, now 4-1, by 18 and a 25-point win at Western Michigan, which is 3-2. Saturday's game was over early. Boise led 21-0 in the second quarter, Utah State never got closer than 13, Maddux Madsen went 17 of 21 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, and Jake Ripp returned an interception 21 yards for a score. None of the wins are over power-conference teams, which is why Boise starts here. Next: at Fresno State, also 4-1.

Utah

W 66-14 Idaho

Down seven while idle. Utah is unbeaten, but its best win is 31-17 at Iowa State, which is 3-2 after beating West Virginia on Saturday. The others are over Arkansas, now 2-3 after losing 34-7 at Texas A&M, Utah State and Idaho, an FCS team. That's still a road win over a team with a winning record, which UCLA doesn't have, and it's why Utah stays in while UCLA drops out. Kansas visits Saturday.

W 34-24 at Wash. State
W 34-7 Cincinnati
New, after beating a Cincinnati team that came in 4-0 by 27. Arizona led 34-0 before the Bearcats scored with 1:56 left, outgained them 522-227, and held them to 74 rushing yards. Noah Fifita threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. The loss is 28-17 at BYU, our No. 13, and the other wins are over Northern Arizona, an FCS team, Northern Illinois and Washington State, which is why Arizona enters at the bottom. Next: at West Virginia.
