Ohio State won 19-15 at Indiana and is No. 1. Indiana's first loss ends the champion rule, and on its résumé the Hoosiers fall 14 places to 15th. Georgia lost at home to Auburn on a field goal as time ran out, Alabama lost by 16 at Tennessee and Texas lost at home to Florida, so four of last week's top five lost. BYU beat Notre Dame on a touchdown with 1:47 left and moves from 11th to second, UCLA rises nine places to third, and Florida rises 12 to eighth, the biggest climb of the week.
Texas is sixth after two straight losses and stays ahead of Florida, which won in Austin, because the Longhorns have the best pair of wins anyone has, Ohio State and at Tennessee, and both of their losses are by three; Florida's other two are by 28 and 19. Ohio State is first even though it lost at Texas, because it has two road wins over one-loss teams and Texas has two losses. Indiana lands behind Houston, which has a win over a ranked team, and Oklahoma State is 24th, 11 places behind the Oregon team it beat, because it also lost at Tulsa.
Mississippi State, Missouri and Oklahoma drop out; Tennessee, Auburn and James Madison come in. Missouri beat Florida by 28 two weeks ago, but it lost 31-3 at Ole Miss on Saturday and lost earlier to Mississippi State, which was shut out at LSU. Next weekend: Ole Miss at Texas, LSU at Auburn, Houston at Utah, Indiana at Michigan, Texas Tech at Cincinnati, Iowa at Minnesota, USC at Wisconsin, Tennessee at South Carolina, Pittsburgh at Miami and James Madison at App State on Thursday. Ohio State, Florida, Georgia and Notre Dame are idle.
Method
Results only. Preseason polls, recruiting rankings, coaching hires and offseason talk don't count. The inputs are who a team beat, where the game was played, and by how much.
Who you beat matters most: a win over a good team outweighs any blowout of a bad one, and opponent quality is judged by how those opponents have played this season. A road win counts for more than a neutral-site win, and a neutral-site win for more than a home win. A close road loss to a top team can rank above an unbeaten record against weak opponents. Margin breaks ties between similar résumés; it won't lift a team past one with better wins.
One exception: the defending national champion holds No. 1 until it loses. Every Sunday morning the Top 25 is rebuilt from scratch, not shuffled from last week's list. Seven games is still a thin résumé, so expect more movement in September than in November. When a placement is an editorial call that departs from this method, the team's note says so.
Corrections
The Week 6 Indiana note said Nebraska's last two drives ended on downs; Nebraska got the ball back once more after Tobi Osunsanmi's fourth-down sack, with 13 seconds left, and the game ended on that possession.

Heisman watch
Five players, ranked on the same terms as our NFL MVP watch: production adjusted for efficiency and mistakes, the defenses faced, how much of the offense runs through them and how much help they have. College adds one more: level of competition. Numbers against FCS teams count for little, and a win over a weak FBS team counts for less than one over a good team. Team record counts, but only a little. Every position is eligible; anyone who isn't a quarterback has to be exceptional. Seven games is still a thin sample.

Jeremiah Smith
WR · Ohio State (6-1) · Last week 1=
52 catches, 984 yards, 12 TD
Still first. Against the three best defenses Ohio State has played, Texas, Iowa and Indiana, each of which has held its other FBS opponents under 17 points a game, Smith has 23 catches for 438 yards and four touchdowns. At Indiana he caught four passes for 68 yards, and his 38-yard touchdown made it 19-7 with 12:46 left. All 12 of his touchdowns have come against FBS teams. The case against: a receiver needs his quarterback, Julian Sayin is averaging 10.5 yards per attempt, and four catches was a quiet day in the biggest game.
Second again. He threw his first interception of the season against Florida State and still went 23 of 34 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, the last a 3-yarder to Malachi Toney in the second overtime. For the season he's completing 80.8 percent at 10.6 yards per attempt, with one interception and no lost fumbles. The case against: Wake Forest is the only FBS defense he's faced that has held its other FBS opponents under 22 points a game, three of his touchdown passes came against Florida A&M, an FCS team, and Toney, with 50 catches for 758 yards, gives him a lot of help.
New. Weigman threw five touchdown passes against Oklahoma State, going 24 of 33 for 343 yards, and the last, 48 yards to Koby Young with 9:48 left, was Houston's final score in a three-point win. He has accounted for 26 touchdowns, 23 against FBS teams, with three turnovers, and his six rushing touchdowns lead the team. In the only loss he went 27 of 38 for 283 yards and three touchdowns at Texas Tech. The case against: he lost a fumble in that two-point loss, three of his touchdown passes came against Southern, an FCS team, and Houston has beaten one ranked team.
Unchanged. Against the three best defenses Indiana has played, Northwestern, Nebraska and Ohio State, he's 51 of 91 for 760 yards and four touchdowns, and he still hasn't thrown an interception in 169 attempts. Against Ohio State he went 20 of 40 for 296 yards, and his 19-yard touchdown to Nick Marsh, followed by a two-point conversion, made it 19-15 with 10:30 left. The case against: he lost a fumble on a third-quarter sack, Indiana's last drive ended on his fourth-down incompletion, four of his touchdown passes came against Howard, an FCS team, and Indiana lost.
New. Lopez has accounted for 23 touchdowns with one turnover, an interception at Miami, and all seven of his games have come against FBS teams. Against Miami, the best defense he's faced, he went 29 of 46 for 312 yards and three touchdowns in a 13-point loss. At California on Saturday he went 16 of 23 for 267 yards and four touchdowns. The case against: six of his seven opponents have allowed at least 29 points a game to their other FBS opponents, and Wake Forest has beaten one team with a winning record.
Also considered: Julian Sayin, Ohio State (2,007 yards at 10.5 yards per attempt, but two interceptions at Indiana, and his case overlaps with Smith's); Jayden Maiava, USC (2,045 yards and 18 touchdown passes against tougher defenses than Lopez has seen, but three interceptions and almost nothing as a runner); Bear Bachmeier, BYU (four touchdowns against Notre Dame, two rushing, one passing and one receiving, but 1,257 passing yards in six games and 62 in the win at TCU); Colin Simmons, Texas (10.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss, but 5.5 of the sacks came in one game, at Tennessee); CJ Carr, Notre Dame (27 of 49 for 261 yards, no touchdowns and a lost fumble at BYU).

Up six. Ohio State is the only team with two road wins over teams that have lost once or not at all, at Indiana, now 6-1, and at Iowa, 5-1, and its loss is by a point at Texas. Indiana outgained it 369-313 on Saturday but lost fumbles on two straight third-quarter possessions, missed two field goals and turned it over on downs at the Ohio State 27 with 1:02 left. Julian Sayin threw a 2-yard touchdown to Bo Jackson with seven seconds left in the half and a 38-yarder to Jeremiah Smith for a 19-7 lead with 12:46 to go. He also threw two interceptions, both to Amare Ferrell. Idle Saturday.

Up nine, with two wins over teams that have lost once, Notre Dame on Saturday and Arizona in September, both in Provo. Those are home wins, and that's why BYU sits behind Ohio State. Bear Bachmeier ran for two touchdowns and caught a 15-yard pass from Kyler Kasper for a third. Notre Dame went ahead 24-21 with 9:31 left, and Bachmeier threw an interception on the next drive. After Cannon DeVries returned a punt 23 yards, BYU drove 55 yards and Bachmeier hit Walker Lyons from 6 yards with 1:47 left. Notre Dame reached the BYU 8 and threw incomplete on the last play. W 17-7 Wisconsin
Up nine. UCLA is one of four unbeaten teams with a win over a ranked team, and its best one, 17-15 at Oregon, is better than anything Miami or Texas Tech has. All six wins are over FBS teams, three on the road. Wisconsin, 4-2, gained 214 yards and threw for 66, with Colton Joseph completing 6 of 16. UCLA held the ball for 37:02 and converted 13 of 20 third downs. Ty Dieffenbach went 22 of 33 for 264 yards, Wayne Knight scored from a yard out in the second quarter and Anthony Woods from 3 yards with 11:31 left. UCLA threw two interceptions, one of them by receiver Semaj Morgan. Michigan State visits Saturday.

Unchanged. UCLA moved past because its win at Oregon is better than Miami's best, 33-20 at Wake Forest; the Hurricanes also won at Clemson and Stanford. Florida State, 3-4, led 21-14 after three quarters. Darian Mensah's 3-yard pass to Elija Lofton made it 28-21 with 2:49 left, and Duce Robinson answered with a 75-yard catch on the next snap. Javian Mallory's 25-yard run matched Florida State in the first overtime. In the second, Mensah hit Malachi Toney from 3 yards, Toney threw the two-point conversion to Cooper Barkate, and after a Florida State touchdown was called back for holding, Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted Ashton Daniels in the end zone. Miami gained 583 yards. Pittsburgh visits Saturday.

Up three. The best win is still 28-26 over Houston, now 6-1, and the other that counts is 35-24 at Oregon State, which is 5-2 but hasn't beaten a team with a winning record. That puts Texas Tech behind three unbeaten teams with better wins and ahead of everyone with a loss. Saturday was 43-10 at halftime. Ben Roberts returned an interception 24 yards for the first score, J'Koby Williams ran 11 times for 165 yards and touchdowns of 62 and 38 yards, and Stone Harrington kicked four field goals. Arizona State ran for 35 yards. Next: at Cincinnati.

Down one after a second straight three-point loss. Texas still has the best pair of wins anyone has, Ohio State at home and Tennessee on the road, plus UTSA, which is 6-1. That keeps it ahead of Florida, which won in Austin but lost its other two games by 28 and 19. Head-to-head decides close résumés, and with losses that different these aren't close. Texas led 17-3 after Ryan Niblett's 63-yard punt return. Florida scored the next 24 points, Texas turned it over on downs at its own 45 trailing 20-17, and Arch Manning was sacked and fumbled with 1:58 left, down three. Texas went 2 of 10 on third down. W 26-10 Alabama
New, a week after dropping out. Tennessee now has two wins over teams ranked here, Alabama on Saturday and Auburn, which won at Georgia, both at home, and its only loss is 20-17 at home to Texas. That loss is why it sits behind the Longhorns. Cooper Ranvier kicked three field goals in the first quarter and four in all, and DeSean Bishop carried 32 times for 159 yards and scored twice from 5 yards. Alabama gained 201 yards, went 2 of 13 on third down and turned it over four times, and Jeremiah Telander and Tyree Weathersby had two sacks each. Next: at South Carolina.

Up 12, the biggest rise of the week. Florida has three wins over teams ranked here, more than anyone: at Texas on Saturday, Ole Miss by 24 and at Auburn. The losses, 45-17 at Missouri and 38-19 at home to a 3-3 South Carolina, are the worst of any team in the top 10, and they're why the Gators sit behind Texas and Tennessee, whose losses are by three. Florida trailed 17-3 and scored the next 24 points. Tramell Jones Jr. threw touchdown passes of 7 and 8 yards to Lacota Dippre, Jadan Baugh ran 11 yards for a 27-17 lead with 6:22 left, and Florida held the ball for 38:11 without a turnover. Down seven after losing on the last play. The case is still the 20-17 win at Alabama, but that's Georgia's only win over a team with a winning record, and Florida, which won at the Auburn team that just beat Georgia, has more good wins. Georgia led 14-0 in the first quarter, then Auburn scored 24 straight. Gunner Stockton tied it with a 4-yard pass to London Humphreys with 2:58 left, finishing a 94-yard drive. With 58 seconds left Stockton lost a fumble in Auburn territory, and Alex McPherson kicked a 34-yard field goal as time ran out. Georgia turned it over three times. Idle Saturday.

Down seven after a second straight loss. Alabama still has two road wins over teams with winning records, 45-17 at Kentucky, now 6-1, and 56-23 at Mississippi State, and both losses are to teams ranked above it, which keeps it ahead of the Wildcats. It's behind Florida, whose wins are better. In Knoxville the offense gained 201 yards and turned it over four times. Keelon Russell went 19 of 29 for 147 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble, and his 19-yard run was the only touchdown. Alabama was 2 of 13 on third down and didn't score after halftime. Kentucky has three road wins over SEC teams, at Oklahoma, Texas A&M and South Carolina, plus LSU at home, but the 45-17 home loss to Alabama keeps it a place behind the Tide. Oklahoma led 13-7 going into the fourth quarter. Kenny Minchey's 12-yard pass to Willie Rodriguez put Kentucky ahead with 12:53 left, Jordan Castell returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown with 1:17 to go, and Ty Bryant's interception ended it. Kentucky also beat LSU and has three SEC road wins to go with it, which is why it's a place ahead. Saturday was 21-3 at halftime. Trinidad Chambliss threw touchdown passes of 10, 21 and 17 yards and ran for another, and Ole Miss ran for 257 yards, 122 by Kewan Lacy and 101 by Makhi Frazier. Up two. Oregon has three wins over teams with winning records, two of them ranked here, 41-27 at USC and 34-27 over Boise State, plus Saturday's win over Nebraska, 5-2. The losses are by two to UCLA and by eight at Oklahoma State, which is 24th rather than ahead of the Ducks because it also lost at Tulsa and its next-best win is at West Virginia. Nebraska led 14-6 after three quarters. Gage Hurych kicked three field goals, and Oregon drove 82 yards in 20 plays, converting two fourth downs, before Dylan Raiola hit Jamari Johnson from 4 yards and found Hudson Lewis for two with 28 seconds left. Oklahoma State cut a 28-17 lead to 28-25 on Caleb Hawkins' 66-yard catch early in the fourth quarter. Conner Weigman answered with a 48-yard touchdown to Koby Young, Oklahoma State drove 96 yards to make it 35-32 with 4:54 left, and Houston ran out the clock. The best wins are 20-17 at Nebraska and 29-23 over Northwestern, and neither team is ranked; Houston, a place ahead, has a ranked win and lost by two on the road. Indiana outgained Ohio State 369-313 but lost fumbles on two straight third-quarter possessions, one on a Josh Hoover sack. Notre Dame took a 24-21 lead on Jonaz Walton's 3-yard run and two-point conversion with 9:31 left and lost it on BYU's 6-yard touchdown with 1:47 to go. The last drive reached the BYU 8. It also beat Baylor, 4-2, by a point in Atlanta, and the losses are 44-39 at home to Florida and 24-14 at Tennessee, both ranked above it. Two losses and a thin list of other wins are why it starts here. Georgia led 14-0, and Auburn scored the next 24 on Christian Neptune's 24-yard pass to Keshaun Singleton, Byrum Brown's 9-yard pass to Chas Nimrod, a 49-yard field goal and Brown's 5-yard run. LSU has four wins over teams with winning records, Clemson, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State and Texas A&M, all at home and all by 29 points or more. The losses are by eight at Ole Miss and by one in overtime at Kentucky, which keeps it behind both, and Auburn, a place ahead, has the better single win. Sam Leavitt went 31 of 38 for 289 yards and four touchdowns, two to Jackson Harris, and LSU led 21-0 at halftime. Mississippi State, with Parker Puckett at quarterback, went 0 for 5 on fourth down. Two of those wins lost value Saturday: Memphis lost 31-17 at Tulane and is 5-2, and Fresno State lost 26-23 at San Diego State and is 4-3. Western Michigan won 21-14 at Central Michigan and is 5-2. Down 10 after a three-point loss at Houston. The case is the 39-31 win over Oregon, which is 13th. The other wins are at West Virginia and over UCF, and the 24-10 loss at Tulsa, 4-3, is why the Cowboys sit well behind the Ducks despite beating them. On Saturday they got within three twice in the fourth quarter, the second time on Drew Mestemaker's 8-yard pass to Justin Bowick with 4:54 left, and never got the ball back. Mestemaker went 22 of 34 for 365 yards and three touchdowns, with an interception and a lost fumble, and Caleb Hawkins caught seven passes for 125 yards. Colorado visits Saturday.

New. James Madison is the only FBS team at 7-0, and Saturday's 49-22 win over Georgia State, now 4-2, gave it a second win over a team with a winning record, with 20-13 over Liberty, 5-1. Neither Georgia State nor Liberty has beaten a team with a winning record, which is why the Dukes start last, behind teams with harder schedules and one loss. It was 35-10 at halftime. Camden Coleman went 13 of 19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns, George Pettaway ran 14 times for 119 yards, and JMU gained 515. Next: at App State on Thursday.
Next edition: Sunday, October 25, after Week 8.
