Week 3 is the quarterback injury week. Jayden Daniels dislocated the same elbow for the second time in two seasons, Jaxson Dart's MCL came back worse on the MRI, Caleb Williams got carted off with a hamstring and his backup is in concussion protocol, and on the other side Michael Penix Jr., Kyler Murray and Sam Darnold are all coming back. Five lines moved three points or more on that news alone. What follows is a side on all 16 games against the spread as of early Wednesday, with the bets-versus-money splits and the line movement doing the work. No edge is claimed. Break-even at -110 is 52.4% and the honest expectation is still a coin flip with an argument attached.

Thursday night

Falcons+5.5

at Packers

  • ScoresAndOdds: Packers 55% of bets but only 31% of the money. Atlanta has 45% of tickets and 69% of the handle. Covers has 70% of tickets on Green Bay.
  • Take +5.5 or better. +6 is worth hunting, and at +4.5 I'd pass.

Textbook reverse line movement. Green Bay opened -7, tickets are 55% to 70% on the Packers depending on the feed, and the number has come down to -5.5 anyway with 69% of the money on Atlanta. The reason is Michael Penix Jr., who is confirmed to start Thursday after missing two weeks with the knee. Atlanta got beat 34-3 at home last week with Cooper Rush and an undrafted Jack Strand, who threw a pick-six on his first drive, so the market is pricing the difference between a real quarterback and that. Green Bay's line is falling apart too: right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele is out for the year with a torn patellar tendon, Aaron Banks is questionable, Jayden Reed is doubtful, and they're already without Micah Parsons.

Pick Falcons +5.5

Chargers+7

at Bills

  • ScoresAndOdds: Bills 74% of bets but 61% of the money. The Chargers have 26% of tickets and 39% of the handle. Covers: 74% Buffalo.
  • +7 only. Do not take +6.5.

The number opened at 7 and hasn't moved despite 74% of the tickets landing on Buffalo, which is the same shape that made Tennessee playable last week. Money is running behind tickets on the Bills, 61% against 74%, which means the bigger bets aren't there. None of that makes the Chargers good: they've now lost back-to-back home games by the identical score of 26-14 to teams that missed the playoffs, and they've lost both tight ends with David Njoku and Charlie Kolar going to injured reserve. Buffalo is 2-0 and Josh Allen scored five touchdowns in the stadium opener, though DJ Moore's AC joint is questionable. A 50.5 total makes seven points a smaller slice than it looks.

Browns+2.5

vs Panthers

  • ScoresAndOdds: Panthers 79% of bets and 79% of the money. Covers: 73% Carolina.
  • +2.5 is playable, +3 is the number worth chasing. Don't take +2.

I have to say this plainly: I faded Carolina last week at +2.5 and watched them win 34-3, so I'm running the same play against the same team seven days later and you should weigh that accordingly. What keeps me here is the number. Carolina has 79% of both tickets and money and the line has come down from -3 to -2.5 anyway, which is a book that won't go through the key number no matter how one-sided the action gets. Cleveland won 23-19 in Tampa with Deshaun Watson throwing for 238 and two scores, which is the least embarrassing thing he's done in a while, and they're home. Carolina is without Jonathon Brooks and their defense has now been both the worst and the best unit in football inside of two weeks.

Jets+6.5

at Lions

  • ScoresAndOdds: Lions 70% of bets but only 57% of the money. The Jets have 30% of tickets and 43% of the handle. Covers: 65% Detroit.
  • +6.5 or better. +7 is a meaningfully better number if a book still has it.

Detroit opened -7 and has ticked down to -6.5 while 70% of the tickets sit on the Lions and only 57% of the money follows them. That gap is the whole reason I'm here. Detroit's defense gave up 446 yards and 34 points before the fourth quarter in Buffalo, and the week before that it surrendered 470 to New Orleans, so this is now a pattern rather than a bad afternoon. The Jets are the problem with this pick: they blew a 10-point lead against Green Bay with 13 penalties for 156 yards, which is not a team you want laying anything on. I'll take the points and the sloppiness.

Pick Jets +6.5

Texans-3

at Colts

  • ScoresAndOdds: Colts 58% of bets and 56% of the money, and the line moved a point and a half toward Houston anyway.
  • If -2.5 is still on a board somewhere, that's the bet. Don't lay -3.5.

This is the same signal that cashed with Houston last week, which is either a pattern or me over-fitting to one result. Indianapolis opened as a 1.5-point home dog and has been pushed to +3, through the key number, while 58% of the tickets and 56% of the money sit on the Colts. A line moving that far against the public is the market telling you where the real opinion is. Indianapolis has now lost nine straight games going back to last season, Alec Pierce is on injured reserve and Michael Pittman Jr. is uncertain, and Shane Steichen is being asked about his job. Houston is doing this without Nico Collins, who is out with a hamstring, and their defense has given up 56 points in two weeks, which is why I'm not laying more than 3.

Pick Texans -3

Jaguars-3

vs Patriots

  • ScoresAndOdds: Patriots 65% of bets but only 49% of the money. Jacksonville has 35% of tickets and 51% of the handle. Covers has 65% of tickets on Jacksonville, which flatly contradicts that.
  • -3 is the key number. Take -2.5 if you can find it and pass at -3.5.

The two feeds disagree on which way the tickets are going, so treat the read as soft. ScoresAndOdds has 65% of bets on New England with the money split evenly, and the line moved from -2.5 through 3 toward Jacksonville, which is the version I'm siding with. The argument against it is that Jacksonville's Week 1 blowout of Cleveland looks like a mirage now, because they went to Denver and gave up 14 unanswered in the fourth quarter to lose 20-13. New England just held Pittsburgh to three points with Elijah Ponder generating a sack and a scoop-and-score, and they're doing it without A.J. Brown. Low-conviction lean on the home team and the line move, and I'd understand taking the other side.

Pick Jaguars -3

Dolphins+11.5

vs Chiefs

  • ScoresAndOdds: Chiefs 85% of bets and 93% of the money. Covers: 64% Kansas City.
  • +11.5 is the minimum and +12 is what you actually want. If it gets to +10.5, there's nothing here.

I took Miami plus the points last week and lost by 22, so this is me going back to a well that just came up dry. The case is that Kansas City needed overtime to beat an Indianapolis team that has lost nine in a row, and a team that wins by 21 and then by 3 in overtime is not obviously a double-digit road favorite. The case against is everything else: Miami has been outscored 62-26 across two weeks, Malik Willis is struggling from deep deficits, and Caleb Douglas is questionable with an ankle. The number went from -10.5 to -11.5 with the 93% money, so the book is comfortable and I'm getting no help. Lean, small, and I'd forgive you for skipping it.

Titans+3

at Giants

  • ScoresAndOdds has this dead even, Tennessee 52% of bets and 48% of the money. Covers says 70% of tickets on the Giants. The feeds don't agree, so there's no real signal either way.
  • +3 only. Do not take +2.5. With a 39.5 total the field goal is most of the bet.

The Giants opened -6 and are down to -3 after Jaxson Dart's MRI came back worse than expected on the MCL, with a 4-to-6 week timeline and some chance it ends his season. Jameis Winston takes over an offense that just got outgained by 299 yards in Los Angeles. The market has moved three points, which is the standard quarterback adjustment, but it still has New York laying a field goal with a backup and a total of 39.5, down from 43. Tennessee is 0-2 and Cam Ward has been bad, but they hung with Philadelphia into the fourth last week and rookie Anthony Hill Jr. led the defense with 10 tackles. Brian Burns is also dealing with a low ankle sprain for New York.

Steelers+3.5

vs Bengals

  • ScoresAndOdds: Bengals 70% of bets and 85% of the money. Covers: 64% Cincinnati.
  • +3.5 or better. Do not take +3, and if it gets to +4 that's a real upgrade.

Cincinnati opened -2.5 and got pushed through the key number to -3.5 on 85% of the money, which means I'm fading the handle and not just the public. The reason I'll do it is that this is a division game with a 42.5 total and the road favorite just lost 33-20 in Houston. Cincinnati's front was actually the good part of that game, with Dexter Lawrence, Boye Mafe and Jonathan Allen holding Houston to 60 rushing yards and sacking C.J. Stroud four times. Pittsburgh is the ugly side of this: Aaron Rodgers has no one to throw to, DK Metcalf has 8 catches on 19 targets through two weeks, and the defense is allowing 4.9 yards a carry with Rico Dowdle's toe uncertain. I want the points and the extra half point past three.

Commanders+7

vs Seahawks

  • ScoresAndOdds: Seahawks 85% of bets and 92% of the money, the second heaviest handle concentration on the board. Covers: 73% Seattle at -6.5.
  • +7 only. Do not take +6.5. This is the whole bet.

This line has moved about four and a half points, from Seattle -2.5 on the lookahead to -7, and 92% of the money is on the Seahawks. That means Jayden Daniels' dislocated elbow is not just priced in, it's priced twice. Daniels is out with no timetable and it's the second dislocation of the same elbow in two seasons, which is genuinely bad news, but Marcus Mariota played capably in relief in Dallas and Washington is home with a 40.5 total. Seattle is 2-0 and Drew Lock threw for 235 and three scores in Arizona, and Sam Darnold is probable to come back, so this is not a bad team. Seven points is just a lot to lay on the road in a game the market expects to be this low-scoring.

Cardinals+8.5

at 49ers

  • ScoresAndOdds: 49ers 74% of bets and 82% of the money, and the line has not moved off -8.5. Covers: 67% San Francisco.
  • +8.5 or better. +9 is worth looking for.

I took Arizona last week and they lost by 24, so consider this me being stubborn. The number is what brings me back: 82% of the money is on San Francisco and the line hasn't budged off -8.5 since it opened, which is a book perfectly happy to keep writing that ticket. San Francisco's receiver room is getting thin, with Demarcus Robinson out three to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, Mike Evans playing through a hip that has to be managed, and De'Zhaun Stribling and Christian Kirk both banged up. George Kittle looked fully recovered from the Achilles with 80 yards and a score, which is the counterargument. Arizona managed 151 total yards after halftime against Seattle and Jacoby Brissett is under real scrutiny, so this is a number play, not a belief in the Cardinals.

Buccaneers+1.5

vs Vikings

  • ScoresAndOdds: Vikings 66% of bets but only 53% of the money. Tampa Bay has 34% of tickets and 47% of the handle.
  • +1.5 is close to a coin flip. +2 or +2.5 is a better bet and I'd pass if Tampa goes favored.

Minnesota opened -2.5 and has come down to -1.5 while tickets sit 66% on the Vikings and money only 53%, so the bigger bets are drifting to Tampa. Kyler Murray cleared concussion protocol and starts, which should help an offense that scored nine points in Chicago, though Carson Wentz managed that game fine and Jordan Mason is on injured reserve. Minnesota's defense is the real thing right now, holding the Bears to 4.2 yards a play with Dallas Turner getting two sacks and a walk-off. Tampa Bay is 0-2 with six penalties for 62 yards last week and coaches feeling heat, which is exactly the kind of home team that either wakes up or gets buried. Lean, and a small one.

Raiders+3

at Saints

  • ScoresAndOdds: Raiders 57% of bets and 61% of the money, with the line down from -3.5 to -3. The public and the handle are both mildly on Las Vegas, so no contrarian cover.
  • +3 only. Do not take +2.5.

First, the correction: I told you to pass on this team at -6.5 last Friday and they went to Los Angeles and won outright by 12, so my number discipline cost a winner. I'm not going to overcorrect into a homer pick now. Las Vegas is 2-0 for the first time since 2021 with both wins by double digits and they did it without Brock Bowers, who is probable to debut here after the meniscus trim. The market still has them getting three from a New Orleans team that is 1-1, which tells you the number hasn't caught up yet. The worry is that the public is on the Raiders too, 57% of tickets and 61% of money, and Kellen Moore's Saints just went to Baltimore and won, so this isn't a soft landing spot.

Pick Raiders +3

Ravens-3.5

at Cowboys

  • ScoresAndOdds: Dallas has 54% of the bets but only 22% of the money. Baltimore has 46% of tickets and 78% of the handle, the widest money-to-ticket gap on the board.
  • -3.5 is the worst version of this. If any book still has -3, that's the bet. Don't lay -4.

This is the cleanest money signal of the week. Tickets are split roughly down the middle, 54% on Dallas, while 78% of the actual money sits on Baltimore, and the line moved from -3 through the key number to -3.5 with it. When the handle is that far ahead of the ticket count and the number follows the handle, I want to be with the money rather than against the crowd. Dallas is winning games with Dak Prescott throwing four touchdowns while the defense gave up 389 yards and one sack, and the secondary is coming apart: Cobie Durant is out multiple weeks, P.J. Locke has a torn plantar fascia and may land on injured reserve, and Malik Hooker and DeMarvion Overshown are both unlikely. This one is in São Paulo, so nobody gets true home field, and Baltimore is coming off a loss with Derrick Henry underused.

Pick Ravens -3.5

Broncos+2.5

vs Rams

  • ScoresAndOdds: Rams 61% of bets and 73% of the money, and the line has not moved off -2.5 since it opened.
  • +2.5 or better. +3 is the number to hunt and at +2 I'd pass.

Denver is a home underdog coming off a win, which is usually where the market is telling on itself. The Broncos held Jacksonville to 268 yards and 5-of-13 on third down, and that defense has now looked like last year's third-ranked unit for a full game after a bad opener in Kansas City. Los Angeles has 73% of the money and the line hasn't moved a half point off -2.5, so the book is content to keep taking Rams tickets at the same price. Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams were excellent against the Giants, 195 yards and two scores for Adams, but that was against a team that lost its quarterback mid-game, and the Rams are still without Myles Garrett with Puka Nacua only questionable. Altitude, a rested defense, and less than a field goal.

Pick Broncos +2.5

Bears+4.5

vs Eagles

  • ScoresAndOdds: Eagles 63% of bets and 80% of the money. Chicago has 37% of tickets and 20% of the handle. Covers: 62% Philadelphia.
  • Don't play this at all until Caleb Williams' Friday designation is out. If he's ruled out and Tyson Bagent is still in concussion protocol, pass entirely. +4.5 or better if you do play it.

Chicago opened as a 1.5-point favorite and is now a 4.5-point underdog, a six-point swing, which is the full price of a starting quarterback. That's the bet: Caleb Williams is questionable rather than out, his tests showed no major injury, and Ben Johnson called the prognosis optimistic. The market has priced him as gone. The reason this is a lean and not a play is the backup situation, because Tyson Bagent is in concussion protocol, and a Bears team starting a third-stringer after scoring three points against Minnesota is unplayable at any number. Philadelphia is 2-0 but has won by 2 and by 4, lost Dallas Goedert to an MCL sprain, is already without Landon Dickerson, and Saquon Barkley is working through a stinger that held him to 4 carries for 9 yards. Wait for Friday.

Lowest-conviction leans

Thirteen of sixteen sides are taking points again, and seven of them are home underdogs. Worth being honest about what that bias actually produced last week: the dogs went 6-6 and the three favorites went 3-1, so the record came from the side of the board I was least committed to. Two of the five ranked plays this week are favorites, which is a small correction rather than a conversion.

Caleb Williams' Friday designation decides whether the Monday night lean is playable at all, and if he's out with Tyson Bagent still in protocol I'd skip it. Sam Darnold is probable to return for Seattle, which would firm up the Seahawks side and make the Washington number worse. Brock Bowers is probable to debut for Las Vegas and that hasn't fully moved the Saints line yet. Nico Collins is out for Houston and Puka Nacua is questionable for the Rams, both of which could still shift a number before Sunday.
