Week 5, and the top play is Washington -3.5 against the Giants, where 87% of the money is on New York and the line crossed 3 the other way after Jayden Daniels practiced in full on Wednesday. The board is unusually quarterback-driven: Baker Mayfield is out three to six weeks with a dislocated thumb, Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring, Jaxson Dart is on IR, Lamar Jackson hasn't practiced and flipped a line seven points, and Daniels is coming back in a brace. The splits are extreme too, with four games carrying 84% or more of the money on one side. What follows is a side on all 15 games against the spread, led this week by the bets-versus-money splits and the line movement rather than the injury sheet, because the splits are the only input here with any claim to information. No edge is claimed. Break-even at -110 is 52.4%, and last week was 4-11-1.

Week 4 graded out at 4-11-1 and the five ranked plays went 1-4, which is the worst week this experiment has had. That drops the season to 31-30-1, or 50.8% across 62 graded picks, which is almost exactly the coin flip the honest base rate predicted. Week 4 was led by the injury reports instead of the splits. This week goes back to the splits.

Thursday night

Buccaneers+8.5

at Cowboys

  • Cowboys -8.5 with 68% of tickets and 62% of the money; Buccaneers +8.5 at 32% and 38%. Over is drawing 81% of the money on a 47.5 total.
  • Take +8.5 or better. Covers had -7.5 at some shops, so +7.5 is a pass and +9 is a bigger buy.

Dallas opened -10 at DraftKings on Sunday and the number's been walked down to -8.5, with some books at -7.5, even though 68% of tickets and 62% of the money sit on the Cowboys. That's the market moving a point and a half against its own handle, which is the one pattern worth paying attention to. Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb and is out three to six weeks, so undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels gets his second start, and that's precisely why the opener was double digits. Dallas isn't whole either: DeMarvion Overshown is a long shot with a hamstring, Cobie Durant is out, and Antoine Winfield Jr.'s rib fracture hurts Tampa's secondary more than either absence hurts Dallas. Nine points is too many to lay into a line that's been falling all week.

Eagles+7

at Jaguars

  • Jaguars -7 with 70% of tickets and 74% of the money; Eagles +7 at 30% and 26%. Under is the only side of a total drawing majority money on the slate, at 62%.
  • Take +7 only. At +6.5 this is a pass, because a 7-point loss is very live here.

This one kicks at 9:30 ET from London, and Jacksonville has gone from -3.5 at the open to -7, a three and a half point move in four days, with 70% of tickets and 74% of the money agreeing. The move is earned: Saquon Barkley's hamstring has him week to week with Will Shipley the only healthy back, DeVonta Smith hasn't been cleared, Hollywood Brown's ankle and Dallas Goedert's MCL sprain are both live questions, and center Cam Jurgens is in concussion protocol. But seven is a lot in a game totaled at 42.5, and markets that move this far this fast on injury news usually overshoot the last point or two. I'm buying the number here and not the team, and Philadelphia is 0-4 against the spread, so this is a lean and nothing more.

Dolphins+6.5

vs Bengals

  • Bengals -6.5 with 77% of tickets and 84% of the money; Dolphins +6.5 at 23% and 16%.
  • Take +6.5 or better. At +6 pass, and if it gets to +5.5 the edge is gone.

Cincinnati has 77% of tickets and 84% of the money and the line has gone the other way, from -7.5 at the open down to -6.5, with the total falling three points from 45.5 to 42.5. That's a reverse move against the heaviest handle imbalance on any favorite this week, and the reason is Ja'Marr Chase sitting in concussion protocol with Tee Higgins day to day on an adductor. Laying nearly seven on the road without your top two receivers is how you end up on the wrong end of a number. Miami is genuinely bad at 0-4 and De'Von Achane is gone for the season, so this is points with a bad team rather than a bet on the Dolphins. I had Cincinnati -2.5 last week and they lost outright to Jacksonville, so I'm switching sides on them.

Patriots-3.5

vs Raiders

  • Raiders +3.5 with 73% of tickets and 80% of the money; Patriots -3.5 at 27% and 20%. Over is drawing 83% of the money on a 45.5 total.
  • Lay -3.5. At -4 or worse, pass. Do not pay extra juice to buy down to -3.

Here's the one I'd rather not write. 73% of tickets and 80% of the money are on the Raiders getting 3.5, and New England has not moved off -3.5 since the number went up Sunday. A book sitting perfectly still while four-fifths of the handle arrives on the other side has a view, and the Patriots are 7-4-1 against the spread at home since the start of last season and just beat the 3-1 Bills. Las Vegas is 3-1 and has covered both road games, but Jackson Powers-Johnson's groin kept him inactive in Week 4 and Trey Zuhn III didn't finish it with a knee, which means the interior of the line is exactly where New England's front gets to live. I had the Raiders +4.5 last week and they covered in a 30-27 loss to Kansas City, so this is a reversal, and the number says fade them.

Saints+1.5

vs Vikings

  • Vikings -1.5 with 58% of tickets but only 47% of the money; Saints +1.5 at 42% of tickets and 53% of the money.
  • Take +1.5 or better. A pick-em is a pass, and so is +1.

Minnesota is 4-0 and laying a point and a half on the road, which tells you the market doesn't believe the record. The split says the same thing from the other direction: 58% of tickets on the Vikings but only 47% of the money, so the handle is quietly sitting on New Orleans. Justin Jefferson's ankle still hasn't been cleared and left tackle Christian Darrisaw is in concussion protocol, which is a rough pairing for an offense that's been winning close games all month. New Orleans is 1-3 with its own absences up front in Davon Godchaux, Carl Granderson and Kaden Elliss, so this is a lean on the handle and the number, not on the team. I had Minnesota -10.5 last week and they won 15-10, so I'm coming off them.

Jets-1.5

vs Browns

  • Browns +1.5 with 84% of tickets and 86% of the money; Jets -1.5 at 16% and 14%.
  • Lay -1.5 or better, and -1 is a gift. At -2.5 this is a pass.

This is the quietest big signal on the board. 84% of tickets and 86% of the money are on Cleveland getting 1.5, and the Jets have been -1.5 since the line opened Sunday without a single tick of movement in either direction. A book that won't budge with 86% of the handle against it is telling you something, and Cleveland's interior line is compromised again: Elgton Jenkins is in concussion protocol and Teven Jenkins' back has him questionable, the same two who were out when the Browns won on Thursday night. Deshaun Watson is still the starter with Dillon Gabriel on reserve nursing a back injury, so nothing improves there. Laying with a 1-3 team is uncomfortable, which is exactly why the price is 1.5 and not 4.

Steelers-2.5

vs Colts

  • Colts +2.5 with 70% of tickets and 67% of the money; Steelers -2.5 at 30% and 33%.
  • Lay -2.5 up to -120 juice. At -3 pass; the half point matters in a 44.5-point game.

70% of tickets and 67% of the money are on Indianapolis and the number hasn't budged off Pittsburgh -2.5 all week. The schedule is the argument: the Colts are on the back half of a London trip while Pittsburgh has had ten days since losing on Thursday night, and teams coming off an overseas game have a long history of flat Sundays. Indianapolis is also down Keenan Allen with a groin and Arden Key for three to four weeks, while Rico Dowdle's dislocated toe is the main Steelers question and Jaylen Warren already handled the backfield without him. I had Pittsburgh -2.5 last week and watched Cleveland beat them outright, so going straight back to the same side is worth saying out loud.

Titans+7.5

vs Texans

  • Texans -7.5 with 72% of tickets and 75% of the money; Titans +7.5 at 28% and 25%. Sports Betting Dime had Houston at 91% of early spread money on Monday.
  • Take +7.5. At +7 pass, because a 7-point loss is a real outcome in a 37.5-point game.

Houston is 0-4 straight up and 0-4 against the spread and is somehow the most heavily backed favorite on the board, with 72% of tickets and 75% of the money, and Sports Betting Dime had the Texans at 91% of early spread money on Monday. The number has climbed from -6.5 to -7.5 while the total collapsed from 40.5 to 37.5, which means 7.5 points is now more than a fifth of the projected scoring in this game. Tennessee is 0-4 too and nobody should pretend that's a selling point, but a team that hasn't covered once all season laying a touchdown and a half on the road in the lowest-totaled game of the week is the wrong kind of favorite. Houston is also missing Azeez Al-Shaair's groin in the middle of the defense with Kenneth Murray Jr. coming off a concussion evaluation. I had Tennessee +11.5 last week and they covered in a 24-18 loss, so this is the same side at a worse price.

Commanders-3.5

vs Giants

  • Giants +3.5 with 83% of tickets and 87% of the money; Commanders -3.5 at 17% and 13%.
  • Lay -3.5. Do not go to -4.5. If Daniels is downgraded on Friday's report, skip it entirely.

This is the strongest structural spot of the week. 83% of tickets and 87% of the money are on the Giants getting points, and the line has moved the other way, from Washington -3 at the open to -3.5, which means books crossed the single most important number in football against their own handle. The reason showed up Wednesday: Jayden Daniels logged a full practice, is expected to start in a brace, and Marcus Mariota's MCL sprain leaves rookie Athan Kaliakmanis as the alternative nobody wants. New York is 3-1 but Jaxson Dart is on IR after knee surgery and Jameis Winston is the quarterback now, which adds variance to every snap. I had the Commanders +3.5 last week and they got run over 30-13 in London, so I'm back on them in a better spot at a worse price.

Packers+2.5

vs Bears

  • Bears -2.5 with 59% of tickets and 62% of the money; Packers +2.5 at 41% and 38%.
  • Take +2.5 or better. At +2 pass, and +3 is worth chasing across books.

Chicago is laying 2.5 at Lambeau with a backup quarterback and the number went up rather than down, from -1.5 at the open to -2.5, which is strange enough to be worth a side. Caleb Williams is out week to week with a hamstring, Tyson Bagent starts with Case Keenum behind him, and the Bears' 3-1 record has come without a real test. The reason the market still likes Chicago is Micah Parsons sitting on PUP with his knee and Green Bay at 1-3 against the spread, so what I'm doing is buying a team the market has stopped respecting while its best defender watches. That's a thin argument, the line movement is against me, and I'll call it a lean.

Broncos-3.5

at Chargers

  • Broncos -3.5 with 56% of tickets but only 46% of the money; Chargers +3.5 at 44% of tickets and 54% of the money.
  • Lay -3.5 only. At -4 pass. If you can buy to -3 at reasonable juice, do it.

The handle says Chargers and the injury sheet says Broncos, and I'm siding with the injury sheet while admitting this method usually goes the other way. Denver has 56% of tickets but only 46% of the money, so 54% of the handle is on Los Angeles getting 3.5, and the spread hasn't moved off -3.5 while the total dropped from 43.5 to 41.5. The problem for the Chargers is that they have no offensive tackles: Rashawn Slater is out four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, Joe Alt was ruled out in Week 4 with a neck issue, Trevor Penning is in concussion protocol, and Ladd McConkey's foot and Derwin James' hamstring both have them week to week. Denver's secondary took a real hit with Pat Surtain II out roughly two weeks, but a patchwork line against that pass rush is the bigger problem, and Los Angeles is 0-4 and 0-3-1 against the spread. Low conviction, because I'm overriding a bets-versus-money divergence to get here.

Cardinals+5.5

vs Lions

  • Lions -5.5 with 53% of tickets but only 41% of the money; Cardinals +5.5 at 47% of tickets and 59% of the money.
  • Take +5.5 or better. At +5 pass. +6 is worth a shop around.

Clean bets-versus-money divergence here: 53% of tickets are on Detroit but only 41% of the money, so 59% of the handle is on Arizona getting 5.5, and the spread has not moved off 5.5 since it opened while the total ticked up to 54.5. Sports Betting Dime flagged this game on Monday as carrying at least 80% of early spread money on one side, which lines up with where the handle has settled. Arizona is 1-3 and Detroit is clearly the better team, but 54.5 is the joint-highest total on the board and a home dog in a shootout number stays in the game longer than its record suggests. Detroit is down Rock Ya-Sin with a hamstring in a secondary that's about to be asked to cover a lot of snaps. I had Detroit -3.5 last week and Carolina beat them 32-26, so this is a switch.

Seahawks-2.5

vs 49ers

  • 49ers +2.5 with 86% of tickets and 91% of the money; Seahawks -2.5 at 14% of tickets. Sports Betting Dime independently put the 49ers at 91% of spread money.
  • Lay -2.5 only. Do not lay -3. If a book still has -2, take it there.

Most lopsided position on the board: 86% of tickets and 91% of the money are on San Francisco getting 2.5, and two separate sources both put the handle at 91%. Seattle actually gave up half a point, from -3 at the open to -2.5, and still cannot attract money, which is the definition of a number the public won't touch. The 49ers are 4-0 and that record is what everyone is betting, but Nick Bosa's calf strain makes him unlikely, Brandon Aiyuk isn't expected to play for personal reasons, Kyle Juszczyk is out with a knee sprain and Marques Sigle is out multiple weeks. Taking a 3-1 home team laying under a field goal against a 4-0 road team missing its best defender and a starting receiver, with 91% of the money on the other side, is the cleanest trade of the week. Note Seattle is only 1-1-2 against the spread, so the market has been pricing them honestly.

Sunday night

Ravens+3.5

at Falcons

  • Falcons -3.5 with 52% of tickets and 57% of the money; Ravens +3.5 at 48% and 43%. The most balanced split on the board despite the biggest line move.
  • Take +3.5 or better. At +3 pass. If Jackson is upgraded Friday the number vanishes, so this is a Friday-night decision.

Biggest move of the week by a distance: Baltimore opened -3.5 and Atlanta is now -3.5, a clean seven-point flip, with the total down three from 46.5 to 43.5. Lamar Jackson hasn't practiced since hurting his ankle, Ian Rapoport called him unlikely, and Tyler Huntley is being prepped to start, though Baltimore has pointedly not ruled Jackson out and the coaching staff has described an outside chance. Seven points is roughly the full market price for an elite quarterback, so the number looks fair rather than wrong, and the splits are nearly even at 52% of tickets and 57% of the money on Atlanta. What tips it is option value: if Jackson plays, +3.5 on Sunday night is a gift, and if he doesn't, Derrick Henry and a defense that travels are still there against a Falcons line missing Jake Matthews. I had Atlanta +2.5 on Monday night and they hung 45 on New Orleans, so taking the other side of them one week later needs flagging.

Monday night

Rams-3

vs Bills

  • Bills +3 with 70% of tickets but only 52% of the money; Rams -3 at 30% of tickets and 48% of the money. The second widest ticket-to-handle gap of the week.
  • Lay -3 only. Buy to -2.5 if your book sells it cheaply, and pass at -3.5.

The ticket-to-handle gap here is the second widest on the board: 70% of tickets are on Buffalo getting 3 but only 52% of the money, so nearly half the handle is laying the points with Los Angeles against less than a third of the tickets. The line also moved from Rams -2.5 at the open onto -3, through the most important number in football, which books don't do casually. Los Angeles came back to win at Philadelphia in Week 4 while Buffalo lost at home to New England, and Aaron Donald's back has Sean McVay hopeful rather than worried. Buffalo is 3-1 and 3-1 against the spread, so this is a good team getting points, but the handle and the key-number move both point the same way. I had the Rams -3 last week and it was one of only four wins, which is worth exactly what it sounds like.

Eight of the fifteen picks are on dogs, but the ranked five are four favorites and one dog, which is backwards from how this board usually shakes out. Four games carry 84% or more of the money on one side, and every one of those four sides is being faded here: the 49ers at 91%, the Giants at 87%, the Browns at 86% and the Bengals at 84%. Three of those four heavy sides are underdogs, which is unusual, because the public is normally a favorite-and-over crowd. On totals it still is: the Over is drawing 60% or more of the money in thirteen of fifteen games, with only Eagles-Jaguars and Lions-Cardinals going the other way.

The two biggest numbers on the board are both unresolved. Lamar Jackson hasn't been ruled out, and a Friday upgrade would push Atlanta back toward a pick-em and kill the Ravens +3.5 pick outright. Jayden Daniels practiced in full Wednesday and is expected to start in a brace, but if Athan Kaliakmanis ends up starting instead, Washington -3.5 goes away and the Giants' 87% of the money is suddenly the right side. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both need Friday designations before Dolphins +6.5 is safe, and Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert and Cam Jurgens will decide whether Jacksonville -7 holds or keeps climbing. Every spread, total and split here is the Wednesday night consensus from Scores and Odds, cross-checked against VegasInsider, with openers from DraftKings on October 4, and Thursday's Tampa Bay game kicks at 8:15 ET, so that number in particular will keep moving today.
